Why Add Connections?

  • If you become a #1 connection with someone,

you can communicate with them via LinkedIn freely, and it allows you to collect people’s contact information, as well as past experience and view their connections.

  • Same idea as collecting business cards.

LinkedIn is similar to an electronic Rolodex.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

1st, 2nd, 3rd Connections

  • The blue number next to someone’s name shows

the connection degree between you and them

  • 1st is priority connection; you are connected

through LinkedIn and can freely send messages, view profile, see contact information and connect

  • 2nd means someone in your direct network is

connected to them

  • 3rd means one of your connections has a

connection in common with them

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Connecting to People on LinkedIn

Once these people are #1 connections, we can view their entire profiles and communicate freely via LinkedIn

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Once you’ve acquired connections, you can easily view them

  • Note: When you click
  • n each connection, a

preview appears on the right-hand side of their basic information Tags: You can add a ‘tag’ to each connection, which will organize them into a subgroup. These subgroups are located on the left hand side-Note: AZ, Rep, Classmate, Colleague, Etc.

slide-13
SLIDE 13

How to Find Connections

  • You can only connect with a certain number of

people you don’t know before LinkedIn starts limiting your activity

  • To find new quality connections that you

aren’t already acquainted with, you can communicate with members of groups that you join

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Groups on LinkedIn

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Join Groups

  • Linkedin makes it easier to add quality

connections by sharing a connection with someone in a group

  • This means that you must have something in

common (i.e. location, local golf club, Military, etc.)

  • R.S.A. knows how to locate and join groups that

have people of interest to you

  • Once you are in a group, we can now view the

members and send them a message through the group.

Contacting Group Members

slide-17
SLIDE 17
  • Dr. Olander Example
  • Dr. Olander served in the Marine Corps, so he joined a group called ‘Marine

Corps Executive Group’ In the members section, we can narrow down the type of members we can view (ex: searched Phoenix, AZ). Now we see all the members who have Phoenix, AZ on their profile and can message them easily.

slide-18
SLIDE 18
  • Dr. George Olander Example

EX: Dr. Olander can now send an email to his LinkedIn connections, either to their email address or through LinkedIn.

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Terry Ransom

  • We gave Terry Ransom advice on which

groups to join in order to find more connections, and helped draft a quick message to use to obtain more connections

  • We also gave Terry an idea of an email he can

use to send to his connections once he has their email addresses

slide-20
SLIDE 20
  • Terry,
  • I noticed from your LinkedIn profile that you have several hundred connections,

and are a member of a few groups. I’m writing to provide you with some additional information on how to best increase your relevant connections, and how to leverage those new connections.

  • 1. Join more groups-groups where you will have something in common with other

professionals that you can leverage as a starting point for a Business Relationship. We’ve included several ideas for you (see enclosed links):

  • University of Washington Alumni

http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=40422&trk=group-name

  • University of Washington Law School Alumni

http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=960607&trk=group-name

  • Seattle Pacific University Alumni

http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Seattle-Pacific-University-Alumni- 58047?gid=58047&mostPopular=&trk=tyah

  • Seattle Pacific MBA

http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=42570&trk=group-name

  • Washington State University Alumni

http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=35258&mostPopular=&trk=tyah

  • Look for other groups on Linkedin related to Alumni in Phoenix for all three

schools.

  • Join Arizona Business Networking Group and Phoenix Professionals
slide-21
SLIDE 21
  • 2. Once you have joined these groups, go into the group and click
  • n ‘Members’ to see all the members in the group. You can search

for keywords, so see who resides in Arizona by searching for Phoenix, or Arizona. Once you are able to locate members that live in AZ, simply construct a basic message, such as we have included, with your basic info asking these people to connect.

  • 3. After connecting with people, send a basic intro email to their

emails (which can be found on their LinkedIn profiles after connecting to them), inviting them to meet for lunch/breakfast. Include all of your information (your basic info and bio and photo), and suggest a meeting time for lunch.

  • 4. Follow up, Follow up, Follow up.
  • 5. Keep checking groups for new members.
  • 6. Also may want to look at joining a Martial Arts group in the

valley, or any other group that represents an activity in the area that you would have quite a bit in common with the members. Let’s talk soon and I can answer any additional questions you might have.

Benefits of Having Your Own Group

  • You control the content being posted in the

group, as well as how it is set-up

  • You can directly connect to many more people

because it gives you a reason to reach out to them in the first place, and then makes it easy to access members’ profiles

  • Easy to get to
  • Examples: Financial Success, Golfers in AZ,

Golden Retriever Club

R.S.A.’s Group

  • “Reps looking to increase A.U.M., G.D.C., and

High Net-Worth Clients”

Our Members

  • Once you have your own group established, it is very easy to

access all of its members, and gives you something in common with them
