  1. HELCOM indicators – options for structure, presentation and causal framework First draft of ideas Aim – to initiate discussion

  2. Initial ideas –would need to be adjusted once BSAP update finalized (i.e. to make indicators fit updated BSAP structure)

  7. Options to apply a causal framework and adapt the structure From ToRs of 2 nd HELCOM Indicator Workshop • Develop a better understanding of state-pressure aspects (e.g. loads and state) and the linkages of these components within relevant indicators. • Ensure HELCOM indicators are well adapted to support reporting needs of HELCOM Contracting Parties that are also EU Member States. • Ensure future development work takes into consideration the DPSIR (Drivers, Pressures, State, Impact, Response) framework and develops relevant linkages.

  8. Option 1: HELCOM DAPIMS MEASURE e.g. Population changes DRIVER STATE IMPACT 3 e.g. Blooms e.g. Increased ACTIVITY agriculture or changes e.g. Nutrient concentrations in types of agriculture PRESSURE e.g. Inputs of nutrients

  9. Option 1b: HELCOM DAPIMS-C e.g. Population changes MEASURE DRIVER Consequences STATE (on society) IMPACT 3 e.g. Blooms ACTIVITY e.g. Nutrient concentrations e.g. Increased PRESSURE agriculture or changes in types of agriculture e.g. Inputs of nutrients

  10. HELCOM DAPIMS-C MEASURE DRIVER Consequences STATE (on society) IMPACT 3 ACTIVITY Trends PRESSURE Indicators

  11. OPTION 2: HELCOM DAPSIM MEASURE IMPACT e.g. Population changes e.g. On society DRIVER e.g. Nutrient concentrations and/or algal blooms STATE e.g. Increased ACTIVITY agriculture or changes in types of agriculture PRESSURE e.g. Inputs of nutrients

  16. Indicator assessments – example data Key message – i.e. the BSAP BSAP summary map (e.g. a OOAO summary Seals by species – e.g. Grey seal summary of below components, or other agreed approach) and a brief text. Habitat Reproductive Parasites Demographic Abundance Distribution By-catch Nutritional ? ? ? aka D1C4 aka D1C3 aka D1C5 aka D1C2 aka D1C1 aka D1C3 aka D1C3 aka D1C3

  17. Proposal on phytoplankton – example only Key message – i.e. the BSAP BSAP Phytoplankton – summary summary map (e.g. a OOAO all indicators on one subject should • summary of below use same data source (i.e. HELCOM components) and a brief text. COMBINE) All should give similar answer on • status? (or needs to be explained why not) Diatom-Dino Seasonal Cyanobacterial Spring bloom Chlorophyll-a Seasonal succession indicator often • succession index bloom index intensity includes diatom, dinofl, cyanob, etc Should be easier to automate if • data all comes from HELCOM COMBINE Could encourage cross over aka D1C6 aka D5C4 aka D5C2 aka D5C3 aka D1C6 • between themes (eutro-biodiv)

  18. Proposal on nitrogen – example only PRESSURE STATE (or IMPACT)* BSAP Key message – 2 maps, summary This would provide a better link inputs (e.g. MAI from inputs/load and targets) and concentrations In the sea concentrations. *DAPSIM or DAPIMSC aka D5C1 aka D5C1
