PREP AT THE START LINE
10-5 minutes before the start sequence.
Fun2SailFast
Cruise around “in the box” til go time. Practice starts: run up to line, power ups, Don’t get far from the line; Develop a plan FOR THE START! Get line sights. Which end is favored? Which end or what part of the line do you want to be in? In with crowd or back a little? Height or speed? Who to avoid? What are your first few tacks – where will you want to be?
Fun2SailFast
START LINE BASICS – Strategies
- Stay in the “box”
- DO NOT GO FAR AWAY FROM LINE
- Reach back and forth to find approach
- Set up down from the committee boat for
starboard approach start
- Find clear air and room to move
- Find a starting lane
either side of the main pack
Fun2SailFast
THE START from 3 minutes: 3 Minutes from the horn – locate your spot 2 minutes – BE in your spot on starboard 1 minute – you got your spot and are starting to go 30-40 seconds (or less) Start accelerating !!!!!!

BASIC RULES REVIEW FOR UPWIND
- Boats on a port tack shall give way to boats on starboard
tack (Rule 10).
- When boats are on the same tack, the boat to windward
shall keep clear of a leeward boat (Rule 11).
- Overtaking boats shall keep clear (Rule 12).
Fun2SailFast
BASIC RULES REVIEW FOR UPWIND
- A boat that changes course, even if it has the right-of-
way, shall do so in a manner that gives the burdened boat a chance to "keep clear" and give way (Rule 16).
- Even if you have right-of-way, it is your duty to avoid a
collision, once it becomes apparent that the other boat is not giving way (Rule 14).
Fun2SailFast
PENALTIES
Penalty for fouling someone? - 2 tacks and 2 jibes Penalty for touching or colliding with another boat? - 2 tacks and 2 jibes Penalty for touching a mark - 1 tack and 1 jibe.
Fun2SailFast
LIFE AFTER THE START Boat Speed – Boat Speed – Boat Speed – Boat Speed –
It’s fun to sail fast!
Fun2SailFast
- To go fast you need clear air
- momentum and room to move
- Heel of the boat (8-12 degrees),
- Always sit forward, close to the traveler
- Proper sail shape – not flat, not baggy
- Boom, blocks – around 1.25 feet apart
- is your sail shape moving wind
correctly?
Fun2SailFast
GOOD TACKS – are smooth Well practiced, well timed tacks! DON’T JAM THE TILLER OVER move tiller smoothly, consistently don’t put breaks on DON’T rock the boat, keep heel consistent
Fun2SailFast
UPWIND – THE LIFTED TACK
- Lifted tack: there will always be one tack taking you
closer to the mark
- If you see your bow dropping against the shoreline –
you are being headed – BAD!
- If you see and feel you boat pointing close to the
windward mark – you are being lifted – GOOD!
Fun2SailFast
UPWIND LEG – PLANNING
- Look up the lake – look for dark water
- Where are the WIND SHIFTS? Where are PUFFS?
- Where is the fleet going? Stay with the fleet, don’t go to corner!
- Stay free of other boats – keep clear of wind shadows.
- Based on your boat angle and shifts, where will the layline be?
- Find prevailing wind and take the longest tack first.
Fun2SailFast
- You lose speed and position every time
you tack so be deliberate when you tack
- Don’t tack too often – moderate, steady
wind is between 5 to 7 tacks up the lake to mark;
- Tacking: you want to make a smooth arc
to maintain speed; sharp tacks act like car breaks, slow you down
Fun2SailFast
If you know the prevailing wind shifts and which tack will be best, sail the longest tack first. Where is the lay line to the WW mark? and how far will you want to be when go for it?
Fun2SailFast
WINDWARD MARK
Fun2SailFast
Entering the 3 boat lengths from the mark, boat closest and most inside to the mark has rights to round the mark first
Boats overlapping and on the inside at 3 boat length have right-of-way
Fun2SailFast
BAD: boat A did not complete it’s tack
(before the three boat lengths zone), it has no rights and has fouled B. Boat A must spin to exonerate itself.
GOOD: A has reached the 3 boat
lengths circle and completed it’s tack
- nto starboard gaining overlap on B.
B must give A room to round the mark.
Three boat lengths circle
Fun2SailFast
WINDWARD MARK – planning Sail up to the layline – go slightly above You hit the lay line 6 to 10 boat lengths from the mark, not too soon and not too far away. Wind shifts can knock you off the layline. Don’t Hit the mark – penalty; don’t foul another boat – penalty WINDWARD MARK and his buddy THE OFFSET Look – where the wind is going? Where and how often the wind is shifting; where is rest of fleet going? Look – how far out are people sailing from the offset? Gybe around offset immediately and go left or sail a bit further out and then gybe?
Fun2SailFast

Fun2SailFast
C O M M O N M I S T A K E S
- Too far below, must pinch to the mark,
slow, don’t make it.
- Over standing the mark (too far above) and
letting too many people past you
- You make the layline too soon – lots of boats are
in front of you
- Get to layline too late and you are stuck below a
line of starboard tackers Don’t run into the mark or the off set!
Fun2SailFast
Who has the layline? Who will have rights?

DOWNWIND LEG
- Pull up boards 3/4;
- Loosen your sail controls (outhaul, cunningham)
bag the sail (depending on wind);
- HEEL YOUR BOAT; DON’T ROCK YOUR BOAT
- Look behind you for puffs behind you
- Aim for nearest boat; cover boat in front of you.
- Ask: where is the fleet in front going?
- Low wind – sit on same side as sail
- Med/high wind – sit opposite sail, hike
- Jibe for major wind shifts to maintain course
- GIVE WAY TO BOATS GOING UPWIND
WINDWARD/LEEWARD RULES
Fun2SailFast
DOWNWIND LEG Don't sail straight down wind on long course. It's faster to sail slightly off the wind
Fun2SailFast
LEEWARD MARK ROUNDING
Three boat lengths rules apply at the leeward mark as well - Inside and overlapped has rights. wind
Fun2SailFast
LEEWARD MARK ROUNDING
- 20-40 lengths from mark - plan your upwind leg
- Scan for boats around you
- 10-20 boat lengths from mark: Drop leeward board;
return sail controls to upwind settings
- Prep to gybe soft arc to keep momentum: TRY NOT
to do a sharp turn around the mark.
- Pull sheet in quickly to close hauled going up wind.
Fun2SailFast
LEEWARD MARK ROUNDING
Prep to gybe soft arc to keep momentum: start wide and then finish close to the mark Sheet in as you are rounding up to mark: start wide and finish up close to the mark After you round the mark, review position and then readjust your upwind course plans; sail fast!
Fun2SailFast
Fun2SailFast
Fun2SailFast
2nd Upwind Leg
- Watch the wind shifts – where are the
wind shifts?
- Watch the remaining downwind boats go
for leeward mark – which side of them do you want to be on as you move up the lake?
- Avoid the wind shadow of the downwind
fleet or of other boats in front of you.
- Where is the fleet going?
Fun2SailFast
Fast forward… After several upwind and downwind legs it’s time for the big, big FANTASTIC RACE FINISH LINE!
Fun2SailFast
IT THAT THE FINISH LINE?
COMMITTEE BOAT
Fun2SailFast
FINISH LINE – Basics
- Shares similar concepts to windward mark layline – visualize
the layline, know it!
- “Height” is important. You want to be higher to the wind and
the LINE than others
- You want to cover boat nearest/just below you.
- Stay between boats and the finish line while monitoring your
layline to finish.
- Always say thank you to the committee boat after they call your
sail number.
