Collective Giving Experiences and an Equity Learning Arc for Donors

Giving Circles  EBCF has supported giving circles in the past, however since October, we’ve welcomed two women-led circles to EBCF:

  • The Economic Development and Justice Giving Circle (EDJe), which supports organizations focused on access to

child care for low-income families and sex trafficking, and

  • The Race, Gender and Human Rights (RGHR) Giving Circle, which promotes human rights and racial and gender

justice by challenging the criminal justice system and its use of mass incarceration in California.

  • These types of giving circles = donor segments we want to attract more of.

 They also are providing us with one live opportunity to develop a broader donor equity learning arc. Donor Equity Learning Arc  We are also developing a Learning Arc with individual donors who come to EBCF to strengthen their understanding, identity, and ability to address deep, structural change in our community through their individual and collective actions, including philanthropy.  Participants will be focused on learning about the history and origination of current structural and systemic barriers to

  • pportunity in our society (including policies, mindsets and narratives), and what it will take to improve conditions for

entire populations or communities.  We are experimenting with the CIP team on ways to expose select, new donors to core equity frameworks.

  • Kent Rasmussen ($1M DAF holder) - Has been an important case study about how to provide donor education

around social justice/systemic inequalities/EBCF’s vision around a just East Bay and how CIP/DEV can work together collaboratively.

RFP For Feasibility Study – Possible Endowment Campaign

 RFP has been revised to avoid duplication of ongoing or prior research on our readiness for a campaign.  Senior leadership has been addressing internal capacity gaps raised by D. Omi report (shared with board in Dec. 2017) and action plans have been set, with leadership taking responsibility for different areas.

  • Some concrete steps have already been taken.

 Results of a feasibility study will feed into and strengthen ongoing work to revise our business model, engage in any type of major gift solicitation effort.  Recommendation: Move forward with issuing RFP in March/April 2018; select final consulting firm by June.

  • Goal is to have 1st in Fall 2018, 2nd in Winter/Early Spring 2019.
  • Announce large unrestricted gifts made by 2-3 core partners (e.g. Kaiser, Kapor,

Rogers) by 1st event as a symbolic investment in EBCF’s future; will strengthen end of year appeal.  Request:

  • 3-4 board members to be part of a 90th Anniversary Committee with EBCF leadership.
