Background

 State has applied for a federal Fostering Advancements

in Shipping and Transportation for the Long-Term Achievement of National Efficiencies (FASTLANE) Grant

 If grant is received, project must start construction in 2

years.

 Anticipate 3 years of construction.  If not received, will re-apply in 2017 (up to 5 years)  No design for project  Data collection/preliminary engineering will begin in

this month.

Interchange Details

 Built in 1969  1.6% of the bridge deck statewide  27 total bridges (includes 3 at Garfield & I-535)

 25 overweight permit restricted

 Nonstandard Geometrics

 Left exits  Blind merges

 Cannot handle oversized/overweight loads

Project Assumptions

 No new permanent right of way  Two years of preliminary engineering  3 years of construction

 Assumes accelerated techniques

 Environmental Document − Categorical Exclusion

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Preliminary Project Goals

 Replace restricted bridges  Develop standard geometrics

 No left exits/weaves  No blind merges  Direct connections for I-35, Hwy 53 and I-535

 Minimize impacts to traffic and neighborhood  Improve Miller Creek and storm water management

SLIDE 13

Construction Challenges

 Staging areas

 Minimal R/W  Adjacent City street

 Construction access  Traffic management  Curved beams, fabrication timelines  Accelerated construction  Time − anticipate 3 year construction  Minimizing neighborhood impacts  Railroad access
