  3. Objective • To inform you about the Kindergarten screening and recommendation process. • To answer questions regarding the kindergarten screening and recommendation process.

  4. • Federal and state law requires that students who speak another language(s) other than English are spoken at home, must be administered an English proficiency test to determine a student’s eligibility for English language development support services.

  5. Our Mission • The Rochelle Public Schools provides programs of language instruction so that students meet the same challenging academic content and student achievement standards that all students are expected to meet while they develop English language proficiency.

What programs are available for my child? • ■■ Dual Language Program 50-50 • Two-Way Immersion, integrates native English speakers and native speakers of another language for academic content instruction through both English and the partner language beginning in elementary schools. Approximately half of students are from Spanish-speaking homes and half from homes in which English (or another language) is spoken. Instruction integrates literacy and academic content knowledge in both languages. Curriculum focuses on challenging, age- appropriate academic skills and knowledge aligned to high standards for all students. • • ■■ Part‐Time TBE Program • A part‐time TBE program consists of the same instructional components as a full‐time TBE program. However the amount of time dedicated to native language instruction will decrease as ELLs become eligible to participate in more aspects of the school’s general program of instruction, including subject areas in which the content is taught in English. • • ■■ Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI) • The purpose of the TPI program is to provide ELLs with English as a Second Language instruction and additional resources and supports in the general program of instruction. English language learners may be part of the general program of instruction and must receive daily ESL from appropriately certified teachers. •
