Converged subscriber and session management

Aim: have a mechanism for managing all these in a converged way In communicaEon networks: a mulEtude of – – idenEEes, – user/subscriber profiles, – authenEcaEon mechanisms – Currently no global subscriber management for a fixed–mobile operator – Full merging may not be required – a unified view of all subscriber data is necessary – Need a set of technical soluEons which smoothly works with the current technology

State of the art: Mobile traffic offload to Wi-Fi networks

The 3GPP AAA server connects the HSS and the non-3GPP (e.g. Wi-Fi) network In a Wi-Fi network mobile users are authenEcated and authorized through registered AAA clients 3GPP and non-3GPP wireless interworking is addressed in the mobile core

Alice (mother of Bob): Subscriber to mobile, fixed line, public hotspot and video-on-demand OTT services User of all the above services – has her own user profile for each service Bob (child of Alice): User of fixed line and video-on-demand services – with limited user profiles

User versus Subscriber

User: A person or a machine using the access/service at a given Eme. Subscriber: As defined by 3GPP TR 21.905 version 12.0.0 Release 12: “A Subscriber is an en.ty (associated with one or more users) that has subscribed a service with a provider. The subscriber is allowed to subscribe and unsubscribe services, to register a user or a list of users authorised to enjoy these services, and also to set the limits rela.ve to the use that associated users make of these services”.

State of the art: The User Data Convergence concept

The UDC concept separates user data from applicaEon logic User data is stored in the User Data Repository – the UDC database The UDR is replicated for redundancy Client requests are handled by the UDR Frontends But: Storing all subscriber and user profiles in a single database may not be realisEc or desirable

uAUT: Universal Subscriber and User AuthenRcaRon

Single funcEonal block complements and improves the UDC concept.

  • consideraEon of data model
  • new Frontend applicaEons
  • database access opEmizaEon
  • extended to OTT services

AuthenEcate once and have access to mulEple networks and/or services. Part of the control plane, interfaces with the management plane Allows authenEcaEon mechanisms based on Web technologies

Short term transiRon to converged subscriber and session management

Step-by-step evoluEon: minimal change in the short term.

Today’s user authenEcaEon servers are kept as they are now In the short term the uAUT only forwards requests to the exisEng servers A “Hybrid” user is accessing services from mulEple service providers AuthenEcaEon requests are directed to the Universal AuthenEcaEon Server

Long term transiRon to converged subscriber and session management

In the long term the UDC architecture is progressively taking the lead for all subscriber related databases
