  1. Fixed–mobile convergence FuncRonal convergence Converged subscriber and session management Dirk Breuer Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, Germany Tibor Cinkler Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary Stéphane Gosselin Orange R&D, France Annie Gravey Telecom Bretagne, France Ali Hamidian Ericsson Research, Sweden Stefan Höst Lund University, Sweden Tahar Mamouni Orange R&D, France Péter Olaszi AITIA InternaRonal, Inc., Hungary Stephan Pachnicke ADVA OpRcal Networking SE, Germany Björn Skubic Ericsson Research, Sweden Jose Torrijos Gijón Telefónica InvesRgación y Desarrollo, Spain This ongoing work receives funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° 317762 “COMBO project” IEEE HPSR Conference | Budapest, 2015 July 1-4 | FMC Tutorial | FuncEonal convergence 1 1

  2. Converged subscriber and session management In communicaEon networks: a mulEtude of – – idenEEes, – user/subscriber profiles, – authenEcaEon mechanisms – Currently no global subscriber management for a fixed–mobile operator – Full merging may not be required – a unified view of all subscriber data is necessary – Need a set of technical soluEons which smoothly works with the current technology Aim : have a mechanism for managing all these in a converged way IEEE HPSR Conference | Budapest, 2015 July 1-4 | FMC Tutorial | FuncEonal convergence 2 2

  3. State of the art: Mobile traffic offload The 3GPP AAA server connects the HSS to Wi-Fi networks and the non-3GPP (e.g. Wi-Fi) network 3GPP and non-3GPP wireless interworking is addressed in the mobile core In a Wi-Fi network mobile users are authenEcated and authorized through registered AAA clients IEEE HPSR Conference | Budapest, 2015 July 1-4 | FMC Tutorial | FuncEonal convergence 3 3 3

  4. User versus Subscriber User : A person or a machine using the access/service at a given Eme. Subscriber : As defined by 3GPP TR 21.905 version 12.0.0 Release 12: “A Subscriber is an en.ty (associated with one or more users) that has subscribed a service with a provider. The subscriber is allowed to subscribe and unsubscribe services, to register a user or a list of users authorised to enjoy these services, and also to set the limits rela.ve to the use that associated users make of these services”. Example Alice (mother of Bob): Subscriber to mobile, fixed line, public hotspot and video-on-demand OTT services User of all the above services – has her own user profile for each service Bob (child of Alice): User of fixed line and video-on-demand services – with limited user profiles IEEE HPSR Conference | Budapest, 2015 July 1-4 | FMC Tutorial | FuncEonal convergence 4 4

  5. State of the art: The User Data Convergence concept Specified by the 3GPP TS 23.335 technical specificaEon But: Storing all subscriber and user profiles in a single database may not be realisEc or desirable The UDR is User data is stored in the replicated for User Data Repository – redundancy the UDC database The UDC concept Client requests are separates user data handled by the UDR from applicaEon logic Frontends IEEE HPSR Conference | Budapest, 2015 July 1-4 | FMC Tutorial | FuncEonal convergence 5 5 5

  6. uAUT: Universal Subscriber and User AuthenRcaRon uAUT server Part of the control plane, interfaces with the management plane Allows authenEcaEon mechanisms based on Web technologies Single funcEonal block complements and improves the UDC concept. consideraEon of data model • new Frontend applicaEons • database access opEmizaEon • AuthenEcate once and have access to extended to OTT services • mulEple networks and/or services. IEEE HPSR Conference | Budapest, 2015 July 1-4 | FMC Tutorial | FuncEonal convergence 6 6 6

  7. Short term transiRon to converged subscriber and session management Step-by-step evoluEon: minimal change in the short term. AuthenEcaEon uAUT server requests are directed to the Universal AuthenEcaEon Server In the short term the uAUT only forwards requests to the exisEng servers Today’s user authenEcaEon A “Hybrid” user is servers are kept as accessing services from they are now mulEple service providers IEEE HPSR Conference | Budapest, 2015 July 1-4 | FMC Tutorial | FuncEonal convergence 7 7 7

  8. Long term transiRon to converged subscriber and session management In the long term the UDC architecture is progressively taking the lead for all subscriber related databases IEEE HPSR Conference | Budapest, 2015 July 1-4 | FMC Tutorial | FuncEonal convergence 8 8 8
