  3. STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS Male = 52.7% Female = 47.3% Avg. Age @ enrollment = 16.6 years Average credit deficiency at enrollment = 1.0 years Pregnant/parenting = 5.5 % all students ( 3.9% 2018, 9.8% 2017) 11.5 % all female students (8.9% 2018, 21.1% 2017) 9.7% have a health condition that impacts learning 18% on truancy petition Ethnicity Caucasian Hispanic Other 23.0 % 64.8 % 12.2%

STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS • 13.5% of student at enrollment indicate Spanish/Mixtec/Trique is their primary language • Upon enrollment 60% of minority, non-primary English language learner students had failed at least 3 classes the previous semester. • Emerson provides individualized language instructional support to Transitional Bilingual students

STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS • 77% of Emerson students report at least one significant trauma; 35% report 3+ more trauma experiences: disproportionately higher than same aged students in regular high schools • Centers for Disease Control Adverse Childhood Experiences- ACE’s ] • High ACE’s scores are correlated to health and other problems that impact school attendance, achievement and overall and life success. • Emerson’s approach incorporates SAMSHA ‘Trauma Informed Principals & Practice” A trauma-informed approach reflects six key principles: Safety, Trustworthiness & Transparency Peer support, Collaboration and mutuality Empowerment, voice and choice Cultural, Historical, and Gender Issues

CURRICULUM  The Common Core Standards  Additional curriculum is via Alternative Learning Experience per WAC 392-121-182 - “ an individualized course of study”; includes off -campus instruction through:  Work  Service learning  Other community based opportunities  Students take/pass required State assessment tests  Students complete State CORE 24 aligned requirements to earn a diploma from home district High School.

EDUCATIONAL MODEL  Re-engagement through inclusion  Goal Centered - Relevant  Experience based – Interactive  Community Connected  Supported  Students progress at a pace commensurate with their skills, aptitudes, and motivation.  Students are required to take an active role in their own educational decision-making.  The instructional approach integrates academic and behavioral teaching that supports student responsibility and accountability.  The instructional model focuses on real life skills application.  In the relatively small school environment at Emerson, the instructional program can adjust rapidly to incorporate innovative educational practices, and provide responsive student supports and services.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT  3.50 Avg. # of credits (9 classes) completed per student per semester  Prior to enrolling at Emerson students earn an avg. of 1.33 credits in the prior semester – includes credit for ‘D’ credits  85% Credit Completion Rate (Classes completed in the semester)  2018-2019 School year EHS does not issue ‘D’’s – student must attain a C or higher grade to receive credit for classes.  100% Completion Rate of ‘ALE’ credit retrieval classes  Emerson High School will graduate 20 students in 2019:  65 % are minority students
