EMS Each building or technological complex contains a number of energy consuming appliances, but today there are comming also many local power sources (solar, wind, cogeneration with biogas or natural gas), eventually energy accumulation devices (electrical accumulators, hydrogen, hot water accumulation tanks). Each energy consuming or generating device is generally „energy converter“ turning some energy (electrical…) to another (heat…) with some power loss (energy dissipated into environment). Very often, when we talk about energy management, we mean electricity only, but it is important to keep in mind all other energy forms supplied in any kind of fuel (natural gas, biogas and others). We can get requested energy (heat…) using more sources (electricity, fuel…) for a different expenses in time. We have to know energy flows in time to be able to control energy efficiency – so we have to measure or calculate them first.

EMS Automatic power flow control should be based on continous power flow measurement, actual (eventually future) energy prices, technical limitations and current load limits or profiles. We have to take complex look at all ingoing and outgoing energy and related expenses, so we can evaluate efficiency of use of each power lead in time. It is desirable to use not only energy prices in control algorythms, but also all related expenses like purchase price, maintenance expenses etc. of each „energy converter“. It is also helpful to use data of surrounding environment (like weather info) and
- perating plans (like building occupation, production plan) to improve control
efficiency.

EMS It is suitable to link energy measurement and control of more buildings or technological complexes of one owner, even if they are geographically distant – if energy distributors or traders alow to do so. Power consumption/production consolidation should enable better overall energy management. An on-line communication between energy consumer (producer) and distributor / trader can be beneficial for both sides. It enables a dynamic energy price control based on immediate overall demand including a possible way to automatic energy trading – customer (his control system) can request (give) a quote for some amount
- f energy in a selected period of time and then make a deal – this should be done
automatically based on actual conditions and customers preferences. A massive application of an approach mentioned above could mean a start of self- regulating distribution networks based on market principles.

EMS Consumption meter:
- Number of pulses per unit = consumption, pulse frequency = actual power
- Measure actual power only, integrate for consumption value
- Data communication with smart meter giving all values
It may be too expensive to equip each „energy converter“ with dedicated power meter, so… Evaluation of actual power and consumption based on state info (device on/off, actual workload in percent…) may be sufficient in some cases.

EMS Simple connection (turning on) or disconnection (turning off) of appliances or sources based on inlet power measurement with fixed scheme or regulation to preset value is a basic option. There may be just one of several possible goals according to application type – maximize local use of energy produced by local energy source (prevent energy delivery to distribution network) / automatic peak load limiting to prevent exceed of load profile. It is needed to use sophisticated control system taking in account all aspects mentioned in this presentation to minimize expenses or maximize profit related to energy. All scenarios mentioned above are fully supported by ELVAC EMS system.

EMS It is possible to „save“ actual energy excess or cheap energy for future use, alternatively limit load peaks to reduce expenses related to energy inlet (reserverd capacity, technical limits) using appropriately chosen accumulation system. Accumulation principle depends mostly on final type of energy requested. In case that it is thermal energy and we use electricity for heating, it should be more efficient to warm up water and store it in insulated tank than store electricity in batteries (but it may be not always true). There are always some power losses during energy charge, storage and discharge, so control system has to calculate with them along with operating expenses (like cost
- f discharge cycle of accumulators) when evaluating economical efficiency of
particular accumulation use.

EMS If the system is well designed, then (after some period of time, say one year) it should provide all the data needed to evaluate actual state and preferably could prepare draft measures to improve energy efficiency like:
- Extension of local power sources – appropriate type and capacity
- Extension of accumulation systems – appropriate type and capacity
- Extension of „energy converters“, if it is efficient to consume different type of
energy
- Discard inefficient or unused appliances

EMS In 2014 an energy lab for development and testing of control systems for energy sector was built in ELVAC headquarters in Ostrava. These testing blocks for development of energy management systems are an integral part of this lab:
- Photovoltaic power plant
- Wind power turbine
- Pb and LiFePO accumulators + hybrid inverters
- Accumulation water tank (hot water)
These blocks are used for development and testing of ELVAC EMS.
