  • Proposed road widening scheme based on SCDOT-approved Traffic Impact Study by AECOM
  • Preliminary meetings with SCDOT to discuss/confirm road widening geometry
  • Heading west, Amicks Ferry Road will be widened to include a new deceleration, right-turn lane

into the school property’s main entrance as well as a dedicated left turn lane onto Lake Tide Drive. A new deceleration, right-turn lane will also be provided at the bus-loop entrance. Heading east, new left-turn lanes will be provided into the school property at both bus and car entrance locations. Lake Tide drive will also be widened to include a new right-turn lane onto Amicks Ferry Road.

MEDIA CENTER EXTENDED LEARNING COMMONS WHY TWO-STORY?

A two-story configuration was chosen for this school in order to provide the following advantages to students, staff, and the District: Efficiency: Making the school two stories creates shorter distances between all classrooms and core areas such as dining, media, gym, and related arts classrooms. Improved travel times means more time spend on instruction and play. Security: A two-story layout reduces the building perimeter, thereby reducing the number of required exterior doors which serve as potential access points into the school. The compact footprint improves ease of monitoring for staff charged with he security of these access points and facilitates quicker response times of staff and the SRO due to improved travel distances. Economy: A two-story school will be more economical to build due to reduced site work and building system costs. The smaller footprint also offers advantages often associated with sustainability, including maximizing the amount of green space left on site for use by humans and wildlife, reducing stormwater runoff, and mitigating disruption to the surrounding microclimate.

The exterior of the building combines a palette of red brick, glass, and stone. Students and visitors enter through a secure vestibule at the front of the building adjacent the Administration suite. Grade levels are seen on the right in the two-story brick-clad portion

PK/Kindergarten areas are located in a one-story, stone-clad portion of the building with a separate entrance for parent drop-off. The curved forms provide a softer, more playful character for this portion of the building serving younger students. A dedicated, fenced playground is located immediately adjacent the PK/ Kindergarten area. The secure courtyard at the center

  • f the school is surrounded by media & related arts

classrooms, and serves as extended learning and breakout space for classrooms, area for supervised play, and a means for introducing additional natural light into the building within a secure perimeter.

WORKSHOP 1 WORKSHOP 2 WORKSHOP 3 Elementary School 13 Programming Process

Workshop 1 served as an intro to participants, helping all to understand the magnitude of the effort; learn about current societal, workforce, and economic trends informing school design; and appreciate the numerous voices which needed to be heard and accommodated to reach consensus. This meeting helped to establish a common vision, mission, and set of goals for the project. The committee completed a ‘Visual Listening’ exercise in which participants reviewed a wide range of photographic images of classroom features, large commons spaces, media centers, school furnishings, outdoor classrooms, etc. The committee also split into small groups to create an “Activity Map” of how students would spend their time during a day in their ideal, future-ready elementary school. Large group discussion of these activities helped determine preferences and priorities for the new Elementary School 13. Through this meeting, the group established the types of programmatic spaces that were desired, allowing the design team to generate a draft program for Workshop 2. Between Workshops 1 and 2, participants were invited to conduct building tours of similar new schools in the District 5 area. This provided some context for the district to aid in the design team’s discussions regarding a new elementary school for this District. Large group discussions led to the refinement of the guiding principals developed in Workshop 1: A safe and accepting place for all, that connects school and community—grounded in tradition, guided by innovation; A collaborative, inspiring culture that fosters critical thinking and communication; Flexible spaces that allow for innovation and rigorous practices; A focus on student learning and development

  • f the whole child. The committee was then split into small groups, each of which made proposals regarding
  • rganization of the planning area with the help of the design team. This was followed by a large group discussion
  • n the spaces comprising each program area.

The design team presented the revised program followed by a series of building diagrams that advanced the concepts discussed at previous workshops. After confirming the spaces in each program area, the committee split into small groups to discuss the overall scheme, as well as their specific areas, to provide feedback on preferred

  • adjacencies. The groups sketched over the diagrams to reflect their thoughts on adjacencies. A conceptual site

plan was presented, with open discussion following. The input from the committee through the course of the three workshops provided valuable insight into the planning of ES13, with several themes emerging repeatedly through the process: Safe, secure outdoor learning spaces; Collaborative grade structure with proximity to media and related arts; PK/Kindergarten wing with its own drop-off; Admin wing with access to a secure vestibule; Collaborative extended learning for each grade; and a lobby that acts as a separator of public spaces and academic spaces.

Elementary School 13 Programming Process

  • A higher level of cost control from the start.
  • The Construction Manager is an Owner advocate and manages the project with

the Owner’s best interest in mind at all times.

  • Constructability and value to the Owner are afgorded by the Value Engineering

expertise brought to the process by the Construction Manager.

  • Since the Construction Manager is at risk and gives the GMP, he does not

necessarily have to select the low bid, if it is not in the best interest of the project.

  • Selection of subcontractors and suppliers based on qualifjcations and best value

to the project.

  • The Construction Manager’s main purpose is to manage the construction

process, not to just build a building.
