PRESENTATION OF THE LORD Dear Sisters and Brothers, This Sunday is a very special day of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and in this same time it is the celebration of Purification of the Blessed Virgin. According to the Mosaic law a mother who had given birth to a man-child was considered unclean, and was excluded from the sanctuary. When the time was over the mother was, to “bring to the temple a lamb for a holocaust and a young pigeon or turtle dove for sin”; if she was not able to offer a lamb, she was to take two turtle doves or two pigeons; the priest prayed for her and so she was cleansed. Forty days after the birth of Christ, Mary complied with this precept of the law, she redeemed her first-born from the temple, and was purified by the prayer of Simeon the just, in the presence of Anna the prophetess. This was the first solemn introduction of Christ into the house of God. Celebrating this feast may be made with blessing of the candles and procession with the lit candles. The solemn procession represents the entry of Christ, who is the Light of the World, into the Temple of Jerusalem. It forms an essential part of the liturgical services of the day. In some cultures and even in our parish some people ask for their newborn children to be presented, and it is nice and symbolic but not obligatory act as some people may think. In fact every parent should present to God their children every day in prayer. Just to be clear it is certainly an act of faith and prayer, but as Christians we don’t follow all of Jewish rules and regulations. Our Christian initiation starts with Baptism. Our baptism is our entry into the Church. We would like to present the children to the community on Sunday mass after they were already baptized and so truly consecrated to God. Christ is the light of the world that enlightens every person coming into the world, and at baptism we receive a candle lit from Paschal Candle, that stands as one of the symbols of Risen Christ. Today I am writing this article in Brazil, where I came to attend an ordination of a polish priest as an Auxiliary Bishop of Rio de Janeiro. During the day with the group of 20 priests and some other friends and family of the Bishop Tiago Stanislaw and Cardinal Dziwisz from Cracow we celebrated Mass of Thanksgiving at the top of the Mount

• Corcovado. The small chapel is located in the base of the statue. The 98-foot-tall statue soars on a mountaintop 2,320

feet above Rio de Janeiro and the ocean below, and blesses the region with outstretched arms that measure 92 feet from fingertip to fingertip. In 1921, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio proposed that a statue of Christ be built at the summit of Mount Corcovado, where it could be visible throughout Rio de Janeiro. Upon petition from the citizens, approval for the project was granted, and the foundation for the monument was laid in

• 1922. The construction began in 1925 and concluded in 1931

with funds gathered by Archdiocese of Rio. At the Mass I had all

The Statue of Christ provides for Rio de Janeiro. It is amazing. The way the statue towers over the world from Rio gives one sense of his heavenly presence, close and real. Even though so big it looks gentle and humble. Christ with his open arms welcomes everyone to his loving embrace. He is trying to mold you and me to become more like him and hopefully he succeeds in transforming us. Let us continue to discover his love for us and let us allow him more and more into our lives and hearts. The Blessed Mother is presenting Christ to God, today I did present all of you with Christ at Mass to our Heavenly Father. Be blessed today and always!!! Trust in his love for you everyday. Dear Sisters and Brothers, Este Domingo es un día muy especial de la Presentación de Jesús en el Templo y al mismo tiempo es la celebración de la Purificación de la Santísima Virgen. Según la ley mosaica, una madre que había dado a luz a un hijo varón se conside- raba impura, se la excluía del santuario. Cuando se acabo el tiempo, la madre había de “traer al templo un cordero para el holocausto y una paloma o una tórtola para el pecado”; si no podía ofrecer un cordero, debía llevar dos palomas o dos tórtolas; el sacerdote oro por ella y ella fue purificada. Cuarenta días después del naci- miento de Cristo María cumplido con este precepto de la ley, redimió a su primogénito del templo y fue purificada por la oración de Simeón el justo, en presencia de Ana la profetisa. Esta fue la primera introducción solemne de Cristo en la casa de Dios. La celebración de esta fiesta se puede hacer con la bendición de la velas y la procesión con las velas encendidas La solemne procesión representa la entrada de Cristo, que es la Luz del Mundo, en el Templo de Jerusalén. Forma una parte esencial de los servicios litúrgicos del día. En algunas culturas e incluso en nuestra parroquia, algunas personas solicitan que se presente a sus hijos recién nacidos, y es un acto agradable y simbólico, pero no obligatorio, como algunas personas puedan pensar. De hecho, cada padre debe presentar a Dios a sus hijos todos los días en oración. Para ser claros, ciertamente es un acto de fe y oración, pero como Cristiano no seguimos todas las reglas y regulaciones Judías. Nuestra iniciación Cristiana comienza con el bautismo Nuestro bautismo es nuestra entrada a la Iglesia. Nos gustaría presentar a los niños a la comunidad en la misa dominical después de que ya fueron bautizados y verdaderamente consagrados a Dios. Cristo es la luz del mundo que ilumina a cada persona que viene al mundo, y en el bautismo recibimos una vela encendida de la vela pascual, que se erige como uno de los símbolos de Cristo resucitado. Hoy escribo es articulo desde Brasil, donde asistí a una ordenación de un sacerdote polaco como obispo auxiliar de Rio de Janeiro. Durante el día con un grupo de 20 sacerdotes y algunos otros amigos y familiares del obispo Tiago Stanislaw y el Cardenal Dziwisz de Cracovia celebramos la Misa de Acción de Gracias en la cima del Monte Corcovado. La forma en que la estatua se eleva sobre el mundo desde Rio da una idea de sus presencia celestial, cercana y real. A pesar de ser tan grande, se ve gentil y humilde. Cristo con sus brazos abierto da la bienvenida a todos a su abrazo amoroso. El esta tratando de moldear a usted y a mi para que seamos mas como el y, con suerte, lograr trans-

• formarnos. Sigamos descubriendo nuestro amor y permítanos permitirle cada vez mas en nuestras vidas y corazones. La

CUARTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO Domingo tras domingo, año tras año (continuación)…Y, algo después, iniciaron también un tiempo de preparación que, en el siglo VI, quedo fijado en cuatro domingos: el Adviento. Así se configuraba el año litúrgico tal como lo tenemos nosotros actualmente. Han variado algunas cosas, se han añadido otras nuevas conmemoraciones, pero básicamente el año litúrgico no ha cambiado desde entonces. Ciertamente que el año litúrgico podría no existir, que en nuestro encuentro de cada domingo (y más aún: en toda nuestra existencia cristiana) se hace presente de hecho toda la historia de la salvación, la encarnación del Hijo de Dios, su muerte y resurrección, el don del Espíritu: y podemos vivir también todos los sentimientos y actitudes que nuestra fe nos invita a vivir: la esperanza, el arrepentimiento, la acción de gracias, la alabanza, el espíritu de conversión. Pero lo cierto es que va bien celebrar las cosas desglosadamente, separadamente, pudiendo profundizar y saborear cada uno de los aspectos. Nos va bien reseguir paso a paso, poco a poco, la salvación que hemos recibido de Jesucristo, y fijar los ojos en cada uno de los ricos momentos de este camino. Y vivir también con profundidad, asumiéndolas hondamente, cada una de las distintas actitudes que configuran nuestro ser cristiano. Somos limitados, y la pretensión de vivir todo a la vez nos llevaría inevitablemente a la superficialidad y al olvido de aspectos importantes de nuestra fe y de nuestra vida cristiana. Por eso, la celebración honda y atenta de los diversos momentos del año litúrgico nos ayuda a vivir mas plenamente nuestro ser cristiano, y nos educa y nos hace crecer, en comunión con los otros hermanos y hermanas que, como nosotros, siguen este camino.

Dimanche 2 Février : Fête de la Présentation de Jésus au Temple La Chandeleur : Origine et signification

La Chandeleur est une fête chrétienne célébrée tous les 2 février, soit 40 jours après Noël. Le terme de Chandeleur vient de « fête des chandelles », lui-même traduit du latin festa

• candelarum. Il s'agit pour les fidèles de célébrer le fait que « Jésus est lumière », ainsi que

la pureté de la vierge Marie. En effet, la Chandeleur commémore la présentation de Jésus au Temple, la tradition juive voulant que chaque premier-né mâle de la famille soit amené au Temple 40 jours après sa naissance afin d'être consacré au seigneur. Cette durée de 40 jours correspond à la période durant laquelle les mères étaient considérées comme impures par la loi juive après leur ac- couchement, interdiction leur était donc faite de se rendre sur un lieu de culte. Une fois ce délai écoulé, les mères pouvaient se rendre au temple afin d'y effectuer un sacrifice animal et recouvrer ainsi leur pureté. Le jour où Marie et Joseph emmenèrent Jésus au Temple, l'évangile de Luc raconte qu'un homme nommé Siméon y vint, poussé par l'Esprit Saint et la promesse qu'il ne mourrait pas avant d'avoir vu le Messie. Il y prit Jésus dans ses bras et dit « Maintenant, Seigneur, tu laisses ton serviteur S'en aller en paix, selon ta parole. Car mes yeux ont vu ton salut. Ministry of Prayer for Youth We always hope that every parishioner is praying for our teens, our Youth Ministry team, and our work with the youth and young adults. With midterms, regents and tricky weather, January is normally a slow month, and yet 85 teens have come to our parish group over these last four weeks. There are at least 50 more who have been active. We have been coming to know our teens better and aware of their needs. So we’d like to start a more formal Ministry of Prayer for youth in the parish.
