WHAT WE HEARD Douglass School - Community Meeting None to little impact on building layout December 5, 2019 some impact on building layout Big impact on programming and building layout QUESTION 1 WHAT DO YOU THINK THE PRIMARY FOCUS FOR THIS SITE SHOULD BE TODAY? AND IN 20 YEARS? Potential to community Number Comment Potential impact on programming or layout? Additional Comments share with contact info meeting # another use 1 A place to encourage education and citizen participation and ownership of their community 2 An area with a community gathering focus despite a local commercial feel 3 Teen center: place for teens to hang out and have fun Potential dedicated Teen Center space Maybe 4 Adult education classes: single moms, language classes etc. Potential to use multi-use room or dedicated space potential 24/7 security - open at night or evening. Open to public at other times. Yes 5 Should keep existing historic plaques and keep historic meaning(s) MLK march was started by Douglass School alumni. Douglass School Alumni, NAACP, Bluemont Concert, Bahohi - all help to organize the MLK march. The march ends at DS and utilizes the Gym. There are many Gym use and opportunity for *request to keep or make the kitchen bigger / better - have a commercial kitchen - what food is 6 severed / prepared for this event? Have larger gathering space by entry / cafeteria space for public use yes activities and would like to continue to have the march end at the school. Having a commercial kitchen outdoor gathering space would be benefjcial to serve food at this event. Last year there was 1200+ people who attended. 7 A collaborative partnership with LCPS programs and the community to serve LCPS residents 8 Youth place with mentors and a ‘safe place’ for youths and teens Potential dedicated Teen Center space Maybe 9 Collaborate mixed use space: LCPS, Parks and rec, Teen Center Teen center Would require dedicated space for this - 10 Secondary Charter School to provide school choice and innovative curriculum at the middle school level potential for big impact on design and layout 11 MKL march - place of importance should keep the MLK march. Original cafeteria was much larger - need to expand to be large again. Accommodate 12 Potential impact to have a larger cafeteria space. Look into if warming kitchen is okay or if need is for ‘cafeteria’ Yes more people and allow programs to start on time let people use in shifts 13 LCPS Arts Academy Big impact on programming and space use This was in reference to Child fjnd existing spaces - the employees there just want to ensure that 14 Hazmat removal, not just cover up the new space is not just ‘covering up’ existing but that they a have new clean working environment. Opportunity to incorporate ‘museum’ through out the building not just a dedicated room. Potential impact to have a dedicated 15 Turn it into an African American Museum Potential for graphic media / kiosks - need person to manage the museum. Create application, Yes space for a museum scan and incorporate into the project. Maintain artifacts and upkeep - Room 5 (library historic) The focus should be a ‘place for community’ with emphasis on African American History 16 museum space yesterday, today…tomorrow. i.e. a cultural center, museum and learning center 17 Keep school available for Douglass Alumni use Potential for dedicated space for Alumni Could be a shared space with other group or fmex room Yes 18 Youth cofgee hang out Potential dedicated Teen Center space Maybe Keep the building available for MLK planning events and MLK day ceremony. Keep 19 *Cafeteria request could be a shared fmex or meeting space Yes cafeteria available for use by Douglass alumni Association for MLK day food. 20 After hours youth theater program maybe a use for the stage? yes 21 Offjce for youth non profjt organizations potential for a dedicated offjce shared / lockable area 22 Teen Center Potential dedicated Teen Center space yes 23 A place to keep youth out of trouble Potential dedicated Teen Center space yes 24 Lead destination for youth activities county wide 25 Maintain the historic plaques outside and inside Historical site phasing the African American community…where it was, where it is . Include potential space for a museum - meeting shared tables and desk - but lockable dedicated for each program 26 Douglass alum, NAACP, youth. I second this!! Many families 10 accessing the proposed programs may need public transportation. 11 The pavilions and the playground. FCC education . 12 Space to be returned how it was. Cafeteria - make bigger (original size) 15 The historic Plaques should be kept. 1-Douglass 2- Margret Lloyd and any others. 16 Community should have as much access to the facility as possible due to it’s historic signifjcance. Could be shared / multi use fmex space 17 Parks & Rec is a valuable asset that should stay. Dedicated space for Douglass alumni association. We have MLK event 18 potential - dedicated space for alumni Could be shared / multi use fmex space yes and meetings in the cafeteria. Fundraisers as well.
