Our goal is to create a “smart sensor” that will condition and process a signal locally and output the result to the engine control unit (ECU) via controller area network (CAN). Benefits of this include:

○ Eliminates long heavy cables from the wiring harness. ○ System becomes modular, repairs can be done without replacing the entire ECU. ○ Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is reduced. ○ Eliminates additional heavy EMI and lightning resistance components.

Design

  • We designed the circuit and PCB with these considerations.

○ Conditions Signals Locally ■ To decrease noise, which eliminates the need to use noise reducing components. ○ Self Powered ■ As this control system is going to process the input at the sensor, we do not have a power source to draw current from. ○ Keep the sensor relatively the same size.

PCB Design

Design Considerations

  • The PCB is elongated to fit inside a cylinder attached to the

sensor.

  • Dimensions are 2.930in x 0.70in
  • Goal: Add more test points and miniaturize further by placing

components on both top and bottom sides of the PCB.

Testing

Triumph will provide a test rig that is capable of simulating a rotating gear to test

  • ur circuit.

This test will simulate much of the mechanical and electrical noise associated with the engine.
