Intelligent freight wagons equipped with sensors and telematics

Digitalisation of freight wagons To improve transport services for our customers and meet their mobility needs both today and in the future, we have placed our focus on digitalisation, automation, fleet development and energy efficiency. Between now and 2020, over 68,000 DB Cargo freight wagons will be equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and telematics. Sensors for higher quality Customers already benefit from the possibilities offered by position determination, RFID and NFC labelling, status detection by means of impact sensors for rolling stock with sensitive cargo, and information on load condition (full/empty detection). Depending

• n the particular fleet, sensors for measuring

temperature and humidity can also be added. The turnaround times of intelligent freight wagons are reduced by automated process

• management. The new transparency makes for

an improved quality of transport. DB Cargo’s “Internet of Things” platform – all data always in view Whether from existing systems or from sensors and telematics directly on locomotives and freight wagons, all relevant data is brought together in the Asset Intelligence Centre (AIC). Developed by the DB Cargo amspire lab, this “Internet of Things” platform provides the technical framework for data integration as well as for the development and implementation of analytical models. Special analytics enable us to improve availability and thus provide more capacity for our customers.

Meeting the mobility needs of customers today and in the future calls for a commitment to rail. Within the Technical Innovation Circle for Rail Freight Transport (TIS), the entire sector is purposefully working on technical

participating in this collaboration and fields one of three TIS spokespeople. At Shift2Rail*, DB Cargo heads the Freight Innovation Programme (Technologies for Sustainable and Attractive European Freight) with the focus on digitalisation and automation.

Switching to environmentally friendly hybrid technology

Greater sustainability through decarbonisation of our fleet

For our new approaches to sustainability, we rely on lower-emission hybrid rolling stock to decarbonise our fleet. To this end, we are working

• n solutions to retrofit existing rolling stock and

procure new hybrid locomotives. In addition to classic internal combustion engines,

• ur rolling stock has lithium-ion traction batteries

and generators. The energy-efficient recovery and storage of lost energy (e.g. when braking) is possible by means of an energy management system. This energy can later be used to power the rolling stock as and when needed. To enable the hybrid rolling stock to run with zero diesel emissions, the traction batteries can be plugged into appropriate charging stations for

recharging during out-of-service times.

Quiet and economical

Whisper brakes – for less rail noise The most significant source of rail noise is the contact between wheel and rail. Modern composite brake blocks (“whisper brakes”) keep the running surface smooth, thereby halving the noise level. By 2020, all of our (approximately) 65,000 freight wagons will be low-noise. LEADER – train drivers save energy Moving several thousand tonnes of heavy trains around the busy rail network on time and in an energy-efficient manner is no easy task. The LEADER driver assistance system helps our train drivers to steer trains through various route profiles and special operating scenarios in the best way possible.
