Definition

  • Experiential Learning and Course Credit by Examination. You also may be able to earn

credit without attending formal classes through two opportunities offered through eLearning OHIO. Experiential learning (also referred to as portfolio-based assessment) is designed to provide credit for college-level experience gained through employment or

  • ther experience. You follow a specific process to compile a portfolio of learning that is

reviewed by appropriate University faculty members and assigned a credit value. Course credit by examination allows you to study or review a given subject and be tested on the subject within six months of enrollment, after which a letter grade is assigned and credit is awarded based on performance on the examination. Experiential learning (portfolio- based assessment) and course credit by examination may be available on request; each request is evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine if the option is appropriate to meet the student’s goals. Experiential Credit aka Portfolio Credit

  • The Experiential Learning Program, also referred to as the portfolio program, respects and honors the

learning that is gained through work, volunteer, or other experiences. Credit is awarded to students who have learned the same materials through experience that students in the classroom have learned. To support the portfolio development process, Experiential Learning students are required to take UC 2030, a course that assists students with portfolio creation.

  • Up to 30 hours of portfolio credit can be earned toward a bachelor's degree and no more than 15

toward an associate degree.

  • Portfolio credit has been awarded for more than 700 Ohio University courses.

Course Credit by Exam

  • If you are familiar with a particular subject or are able to master content without assistance, you

may be able to earn credit through a single comprehensive examination. With the option you receive a course syllabus that outlines course requirements, grading policy, and the kind of examination to be taken. You will need to obtain the textbook and prepare for the examination without assistance from the instructor.

  • You may enroll at any time, but you must take the examination within six months from the date of
  • enrollment. Your grade on the examination will be the grade for the course.
