The report card provides a framework for what students are expected to know and be able to do. The focus is on student learning.

Standards Based Grading Rational

 Accurate: The Standards Based Report Card provides a

more accurate grading and reporting system. Student performance is measured by the attainment of standards. It is not based on a curve; it doesn’t compare one student’s performance to another. Points are not given for effort, participation, extra credit, or non-academic factors. It is still important to communicate these things but they cannot be counted into the academic growth grade.

Standards Based Grading Rational

 Consistent: In the past parents and students weren’t

always sure how grades were determined. Standards based grading will help alleviate any mystery or surprise around

  • grading. Standards based grading ensures a more consistent

recording and grading system. Teachers will determine a well- defined, clear, common, and agreed on priority and reporting standards to be used district wide. Teachers will be collectively developing common assessments and common proficiency criteria for assessment. Ultimately standards based grading is more supportive of student learning.

 Supportive of Learning: The goal of supportive

learning to ensure that students are engaged in their own learning; that they are the primary stakeholders in their

  • education. Teachers provide students with feedback about their

learning & provide many opportunities for academic practice which informs next steps for instruction and student learning. In this way, at the end of a unit or grading period students have received enough support in the learning process so they are able to showcase evidence of their learning.

Scoring Meeting the Standard

 On a standards-based report card, a mark of “3” is the expected goal for students, which indicates that the student is:

 meeting the requirements of the academic standards for his/her grade level.  Marks of “3” and “2” both indicate that a student is working within the expectations of his/her grade level.  The difference is the level of independence and support a student needs to demonstrate mastery.  The expectation is that most students will achieve a “3” by the end of the year for each grade-level standard.  Learners are scored on their progress made toward mastery of those expectations set forth for each marking period.

Scoring Exceeding the Standard

 A “4” indicates that the student’s progress exceeds standards because s/he has demonstrated mastery in terms of knowledge, and

 Applies that knowledge in ways that go beyond expectations..  Typically, very few students would be at this level of performance.  In terms of behavior, students receiving a “4” demonstrate academic and social maturity beyond their years and those

  • f their age/grade appropriate peers.

Scoring Approaching the Standard

 A “2” indicates that the student’s progression of skills and information is in the expected range, but…

 Requires support and assistance to meet the requirements

  • f the academic standard for his/her grade level at this

time.  In terms of behavior, a student would receive a “2” for any

  • f the academic or social behaviors when s/he

inconsistently demonstrates or needs reminders to meet the age/grade appropriate expectations

Scoring Not Meeting the Standard

 A “1” indicates that the student is not meeting the requirements of the grade level standard at this time.

 The instructional level is characterized as requiring maximum teacher support and  differentiation/accommodations or even modifications.  In terms of behavior, receives a “1”. when behaviors are interfering with their learning and possibly the learning of

  • thers.
