14.7% with 1.85 million people living in poverty The poverty rate in 2011 for children under age 18 was 20.7%

residents live in households that lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis

Federal Food Assistance Programs in Illinois

874,109 households in Illinois received assistance from SNAP. The number of SNAP recipients has increased 48% since 2007.
