Principles of Progressively Loosen - Contact

“Close proximity (within 2 meters) or physical contact”

  • Careful introduction of contact in volleyball is permitted in

this phase.

  • Close physical proximity should be minimized as much as

possible.

  • Physical distancing must be maintained off-court (eg. pre and

post-game). Avoid unnecessary contact (eg. high fives).

  • Any introduction of volleyball activities involving either close

proximity or physical contact should be done within a cohort.

slide-5
SLIDE 5

“a group of participants who primarily interact with each other within the sport environment over an extended period of time (series of events)” ✔ Limit number of people that each individual contacts ✔ Reduce risk of transmission ✔ Ensure quicker contact tracing Must not exceed 100 individuals:

  • Same level or age
  • Includes all substitutions and players
  • May not include coaches, volunteers, staff or referees if they

can maintain physical distance at all times

  • Gatherings may not exceed 50 people

Principles of Progressively Loosen - Cohorts

How should cohorts be organised?

❖ Cohorts may be within a club/organization or teams from different clubs who come together to form a mini-league. ❖ Game play may resume within a cohort:

  • Do not need to maintain physical distance (on-court only)
  • 12 players per court (6 per side)
  • Adhere to all Volleyball Canada guidelines

❖ Cohorts should not mix with each other. ❖ Cohorts must stay together for a period of time. If cohorts change, there should be a 2 week break. ❖ Players should commit to 1 volleyball cohort (exception: High Performance programs). Coaches and referees should limit their number of teams/cohorts. If coaches and referees engage with multiple teams/cohorts, they should practice physical distancing at all times and wear a mask. ❖ 1 responsible person or point of contact for a cohort who maintains all central contact information.

“league play and competitive activities may occur within designated cohorts.” Eg.

  • Games within a club or team program that forms a cohort.
  • League play within a cohort of teams from the same or different

clubs.

  • Regional and community-based (limited travel)

Not permitted

  • Teams should not be part of more than 1 cohort
  • Provincial competition
  • Inter-provincial competition
  • Travel outside of Canada for games

Additional Info for Clubs and Organisations

  • Assess your organization/club’s risks:

No insurance coverage for COVID-19 related claims. Ministerial Order offers protection if you follow public health and sport guidelines.

  • You may prefer to continue offering programs in line with

Transition Measures (Phase 2):

If you are not permitting contact, you do not need to create a cohort and should follow guidelines in Appendix 1.

  • All programs, activities or organisations should slowly

introduce Progressively Loosen (Phase 2):

  • eg. in-team training for 2 weeks before playing other teams
  • Be prepared to provide all contact info to facility operators.
  • Update your Illness Policy and Outbreak Policy.

Feedback from clubs

  • Planning in more time will allow clubs to spread out

tryouts to keep numbers low.

  • Facilities are a major concern throughout the province.
  • If there is no school season in the Fall, club volleyball

should fill the void.

3 Steps to Club Season

Step 1 Training Only Now - January 1, 2021 Step 2 Tryouts Open January 2, 2021 - TBD Step 3 Competition Begins TBD

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Step 1 (Now - January 1, 2021)

Clubs can run in-house training, camps and programs. They are not permitted to run “team only” training.

  • Activities should be in a Train & Play format.
  • Clubs must form their own cohorts in accordance with VBC’s Return to

Play Guidelines if the participants will not be physically distancing. NO tryouts are permitted at this time. Early signing of returning athletes for the club season is open from October 15 – November 30. In order to utilise the early signing period, clubs must:

  • Submit and pay their application/renewal for approval.
  • Complete the Return to Play/Club Application steps.

In light of COVID-19, Volleyball BC strongly encourages all clubs and players to take advantage of early signing opportunities to reduce the risk and requirement for tryouts.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Step 2 (January 2, 2021 - TBD)

Earliest possible date of season start will be January 2nd, 2021. Volleyball BC may adjust this date later if necessary. Clubs may run tryouts if required. VBC will provide further guidance and direction on how tryouts may be conducted in order to minimise risk of COVID-19. Signing dates will be 4 weeks from the official start date. Clubs will be required to take a 2-week break following their last tryout and first training session. Teams should practice together for 2 weeks before progressing into playing against

  • ther teams. This allows clubs to establish and test COVID-19 health protocols.

Inter-club play is NOT permitted during Step 2 (i.e. no playdays, practicing with other clubs, etc). Clubs are permitted to run intra-club activities but will require a 2 week break before competing against external teams in the Volleyball BC established cohort.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Step 3 (TBD)

Volleyball BC forms regional cohorts (divisions) of up to 8 teams. Club competition commences.

  • Competition is only permitted between teams within the same

cohort Competition will be regionally-based.

  • Teams from the same region will play each other in play-day

formats During the season, Volleyball BC may form new cohorts, at which point there will be a two-week break in play. During this time teams will be able to practice but will not be permitted to play with any other teams.

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Club Competition Structure

  • Competition will be regionally-based.
  • Local teams will be placed into cohorts (divisions) by Volleyball BC and

competition can only take place within these cohorts.

  • Each cohort/division will be comprised of 8 teams. The number of divisions

in a region will depend on the number of teams registered.

  • Rosters will be a maximum of 12 athletes per team. No roster exemptions

will be permitted. Rosters will be locked in order to ensure that we stay under 100 participants per cohort/division.

  • Coaches do not need to be counted within the roster providing that they can

maintain physical distancing at all times.

  • Competitions will be modified playday formats (3 pool play matches – the

best 2 out of 3 matches)

  • Pending registration levels and approval from viaSport BC, VBC may create a

provincial division (cohort) for the top-ranked teams to play each other.

  • The format and structure of Provincial Championships tbc.
