THE WHY…

Coaching is a profession of love. You can’t coach people unless you love them. Because no one cares what you know until they know that you care! Without love for your players, it’s going to be hard to build a relationship with them. Without the relationship, it’s going to be hard to get them to work as a team, and to follow you and your instructions. A leader can get by with just respect or fear, but a coach is much more than just a leader of the players. To coach, lead and mentor, these things take more than simple authority. My job is not to be easy on my players. My job is to take these great young people and to push them and make them even better!!! #BeGreatToday #PolarNation

THE MISSION & VISION…

slide-9
SLIDE 9

The Mission of the Minneapolis Polars Basketball program is to offer student-

athletes, through participation in competitive athletics, an opportunity to experience meaningful growth, accomplishment, and success. As a North Polar student-athlete you are a positive role model within our school and the community at large.

Our Vision at Minneapolis North Community High School is to develop a

foundation for a championship program and use basketball as a tool to empower young men to be champions in the classroom, in their families, and their

  • communities. Our desire is to develop the “whole person”, not just young men who

can jump high and score.

WHAT COACHING ISN’T…

slide-11
SLIDE 11
  • 3. About egos, personal glory, or agendas. It’s about serving others
  • 6. All about the championships and silverware, it’s about ‘people care’
  • 10. A job, it’s a vocation and calling
  • 7. All about the Xs & Os.
  • 9. About you, it’s about others and those you coach
  • 1. Something you do, it’s something you are
  • 2. A punch the time clock job. It has no set hours
  • 4. A job you get into with the sole focus of making loads of money. It’s more about
  • utcomes rather than income
  • 5. About what’s best for you. It’s about what’s best for the athletes and team
  • 8. About the destination, it’s about the journey and lessons learned along the way

ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT…

SLIDE 26

Players within my program will learn the fundamentals of team basketball. It is important to

provide players with a well-trained coaching staff. Defense will be the key component of my

  • philosophy. Players will develop in their knowledge of the game as well as develop a strong work
  • ethic. I expect each player to take the game seriously. This will include focus on how players take
  • f their bodies. We want players to see players to see their bodies as “temple”, not as “garbage

can.” As we model using sports as a vehicle to make a positive impact in their lives of young people within our program, we will look to make this principle relevant to younger boys and their families within our surrounding community. We will attempt to do this through our Polar Camp For Champs. Through these camps we will develop boys in the fundamentals of team basketball and will provide life skill development through small groups, and video presentations. Our varsity players and alumni will serve on staff along with special guest coaches and players. We will also look for opportunities in the summer to further develop our players as well as give them exposure through camps and clinics locally and nationally.

MORAL DEVELOPMENT…

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Good sportsmanship and positive attitudes is key within a championship

  • program. My desire is that each player that comes through the Polar program

becomes a better person and is equipped with tools to help them in their adult lives. I expect our players to be positive representatives of their family, school, and

  • community. I want to use basketball as a vehicle to see the lives of our players

changed in a positive manner so that they will use the gifts of God has given them to change the lives of others in the same way. Through school and community service projects we will challenge our student- athletes to use their influence to impact the lives of others in a positive way. As the school and community support us on the court, we want to give back by serving. This area will also be dealt within our Leadership Retreat as we discuss values and issues that shape our system of values as family, culture, and religion.
