  • Only if you are interested in that school
  • Individual College Visits
  • Each student is allowed three excused college visits. Schedule a visit

with the college’s admissions office and bring back a note to Mrs. Glover for this!

Financial Aid

  • The FAFSA is the starting point for Financial Aid.

Apply at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You need your 2016 tax information before you can do this.

This can be done between October 1, 2017-June 30, 2018

  • Check with the college financial aid office
  • With divorced parents, eligibility is based on the

income of the parent the student lives with and step-

parent if there is one.

Financial Aid

  • Students must graduate from high school with a

3.0 GPA as calculated by the Georgia Student Finance Commission. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in college.

  • At a public college or university for this year,

HOPE will pay a percentage amount of the standard tuition charges from the previous year.

Financial Aid

What will Zell Miller pay?

  • If you graduate from high school with a grade point average of at least

3.7 as calculated by Georgia Student Finance Commission and have a score of at least 1,200 combined critical reading score and math on a single administration of the SAT or an ACT composite score of at least 26

  • n one sitting;
  • Or if you are the valedictorian or salutatorian; the Zell Miller Scholar

Program will pay:

  • At an eligible public postsecondary institution, 100% of the

standard tuition charges;

  • At an eligible private postsecondary institution, 100% of the HOPE

award amount for private colleges.

Scholarships

  • Check with the colleges you are applying to for scholarship
  • pportunities – watch the deadlines!
  • Register with a scholarship search such as www.fastweb.com or

www.scholarships.com

  • Listen to the announcements at school for information about

local scholarships (e.g. GA Mining, Exchange Bank, etc.)

  • Check with your church, civic organizations, Wal-Mart, etc.
  • In general, you should never have to pay for scholarship advice.

  • Apply Online – preferred or required by most schools.
  • Most state schools will direct you to www.GAFutures.org

but start at the school’s website.

  • Essay – get someone to proof-read your essay and entire

application

  • Activities – put some details- let them know the extent of

your involvement

  • Resume – get your parents input – they will remember

things you did in the 9th grade

  • Be sure to include community service activities and

community involvement

  • Request that your transcript be sent
  • Most are sent electronically
  • Make sure your SAT and ACT scores were sent

electronically from ACT or College Board

  • Ask for letters of recommendation if

requested by the college

Letters of Recommendation

  • Read any requirements for who can do the letter,

such as senior English teacher or counselor.

  • Try and find teachers you have good rapport with.
  • Give the person at least a week to do the letter and

provide them with the proper heading.

  • Follow up and ask if they have had a chance to do your letter.
  • Be sure and thank them!

Immunization required

  • Most colleges will require current immunization

forms.

  • It is easier to check on these and get these up-to-

date early in the year instead of panicking at the last minute!.
