Project Overview

Project is funded by a combination of State, Federal, and Local funds through the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA). Current project estimate is $86 million.

Administered by the Prince William County Department of Transportation.

Widening of Route 1 from a 4-Lane Undivided Roadway to a 6-Lane Divided Roadway.

Project Length approximately 1.3 miles.

Safety, Drainage, Signals, Pedestrian Improvements.

Undergrounding of Utilities.

Additional Design Features & Considerations

  • Design Speed of 45 mph; Posted Speed 35 mph.
  • Re-Alignment of Bel Air Rd. and Village Dr.
  • Stormwater Management Ponds (4 ponds).
  • Traffic Signals at Featherstone Rd., Rosedale Ct., Bel Air

Rd./Village Dr., Prince William Pkwy./E. Longview Dr., and Marys Way/Mt. Pleasant Dr.

  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Facilities.
  • Wide Outside Lanes for bicycles (15’).
  • 10’ Shared Use Path (West side of Route 1).
  • 5’ Sidewalk (East side of Route 1).
  • Utility Relocation and Undergrounding.

Environmental

  • NEPA Document – Environmental Assessment (EA).
  • Preliminary (Phase 1) Environmental Site Assessment (ESA)

completed.

  • Detailed (Phase 2) Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) to be

performed after Citizen’s Information Meeting.

  • Noise and Air Quality reports ongoing.
  • Environmental studies will be available for Public Hearing in

Summer 2016.

  • No Wetland/Stream impacts anticipated.
  • No anticipated effect on cultural resources.

Right of Way Acquisition

  • Right of Way and easements (permanent and temporary) will be required for

project construction.

  • 17 significant parcel impacts with approx. 73 overall impacted parcels.
  • Affected property owners will be contacted during land acquisition process

initiation.

  • Structures identified as impacted to be demolished immediately following R/W

  • Winter 2017-2018 – Utility Relocations Begin.
  • Fall 2018 – Advertise For Construction.
  • Summer 2021 – Project Complete.
