CONTEXT

Purpose of the Project

Develop a road and streetscape that:

  • Addresses the pedestrian

experience and connectivity

  • Improves the bicycle

experience and connectivity

  • Provides a safe and effi

cient road for all users

  • Provides parking for a wide

range of users Anticipated Improvements Road design that caters for current and future cyclist, pedestrian, vehicle and parking needs:

  • Improvements to bike

facilities

  • Maintain as many vehicle

parking spots as possible

  • Create a safe and effi

cient transportation corridor environment

Road Design Elements

  • Travel lanes
  • Bicycle facilities
  • Sidewalks
  • On-street parking
  • Pedestrian crossings

Corridor Design Considerations

  • Utilities - water,

sewer, stormwater, telecommunications

  • Fire hydrants
  • Environmental - gradient,

vegetation, landscaping, built form

  • Vehicles using and crossing

the corridor

  • Corridor widths

Existing Confi guration - Shared Vehicle/ Bicycle Facility

Pros:

  • Minimal change from

existing situation

  • No loss of parking or

road space

  • Low cost

Summary:

  • All road users share

the space within the existing cross section Logic:

  • It provides 1 vehicle

lane in each direction along with on-street parking within the existing curb-line Cons:

  • No improvement for

cyclist safety

  • Wider lanes

encourage faster vehicle speeds

OPTIONS

THE CITY OF NORTH VANCOUVER CHESTERFIELD AVENUE CYCLING IMPROVEMENTS (4th - 13th STREET) APRIL 2013

8

Option 1 - Separated Northbound Bike Lane

Pros:

  • Improved facilities

and safety for cyclists

  • No loss of parking on

the western side

  • Medium cost

Summary:

  • The provision of a north-

bound bike line and south- bound single fi le shared

  • lane. On-street parking to

remain where possible

Logic:

  • This
  • ption

provides an uphill bike lane to separate bikes from vehicle traffi

  • c. Downhill cyclists are

accomodated in a single fi le shared lane since they can travel at similar speeds to those of the vehicles

Cons:

  • Sidewalk may need

to be narrowed at locations to be defi ned

  • On-street parking

may be rationalised

  • n the eastern side

Option 2 - Separated Bike Lanes

Pros:

  • Improved facilities for

cyclists

  • No loss of parking
  • Medium cost

Summary:

  • A curb line is

shifted to accomodate a separated bike lane in each direction

Logic:

  • This option provides

separated bike lanes in both directions to make it safer for cyclists using the road space Cons:

  • Signifi

cant cost to move hydro poles

  • Potential misuse of

the bike lanes by vehicles - wider lanes encourage faster vehicle speeds

Option 3 - Off-Road Shared Path

Pros:

  • Cyclists separated

from vehicle traffi c

  • No loss of parking
  • Medium cost

Summary:

  • Increase the

existing sidewalk to create a 4m-wide shared pedestrian and cycle path Logic:

  • The eastern side is

preferred as there are Hydro poles and sub- surface utilities on the western side of the corridor that may be affected Cons:

  • Potential safety issues

with mixing cyclists with pedestrians on a slope

  • Loss of privacy and

frontage for some residences
