Richmond/Adelaide Success

Cycling traffic Cycling traffic tripled

And:

  • No impact on traffic flow
  • “How safe and comfortable do you

feel?” from 3.6/10 to 8.3/10

  • 64% of people who do not bike

agreed cycle tracks should be made permanent

How to “do it right”

  • Find more space ($$$)

– Widen the roadway – Build in the boulevard

  • Make better use of the existing space ($)

– Reconfigure 4/5 lane roads as 3 lanes – Reconfigure 4/5 lane roads as 3 lanes – (If feasible, given traffic volumes)

Recommendations

  • Use New Street to showcase these concepts

– Important East‐West route. One of cycling committee’s top priorities. – No dependencies on MTO – Aligns with resurfacing work beginning this year – Traffic volumes are low compared to other major p j arterials

Martha to Guelph Line

  • Constrained space with 10.8 m roadway
  • Current approved option provides an

unprotected bike lane in one direction only

Martha to Guelph Line

  • Since staff report in 2014, scope of project has

changed dramatically changed dramatically

– From simple “shave and pave” to complex $10M city & region project

  • It may be possible to build cycling

infrastructure for less incremental cost than

  • riginally estimated
  • riginally estimated
  • We recommend allowing staff to examine
  • pportunities to improve the current plan

Martha to Guelph Line

Unprotected lane (WB), shared lane (EB)

Guelph Line to Burloak

  • East of Guelph Line, roadway is 4‐5 lanes
  • Current plan provides an unprotected bike

lane in one direction only

Guelph Line to Burloak

  • On this section, there are fewer space

t i t (th h till h ll ) constraints (though still some challenges)

  • We strongly recommend protected cycling

facilities in both directions

– Either protected bike lanes – Or cycle tracks Or cycle tracks – Or a combination of both

slide-9
SLIDE 9

2/17/2016 9

Guelph Line to Burloak

  • Option A: Bi‐directional protected bike lanes

– Reduce to 3 vehicle lanes (cheapest option) – Or expand road width and maintain 4 vehicle lanes

Guelph Line to Burloak

  • Option B:

– Westbound protected bike lane – Eastbound cycle track (in boulevard) – Does not require roadway expansion

  • Other permutations and combinations are

ibl possible

  • The essential quality is dedicated and

protected space for cyclists

  • This is how we get 70% of Burlington on their

bikes! bikes!
