Aaron Cooper (Show-Me Chapter)

 Aaron has done an outstanding job leading the initiative to expand the area of coverage for the

  • Chapter. Re-naming the St. Louis Chapter to the

Show Me Chapter to include the central part of the state will pull in a significant amount of carriers and should strengthen the chapter as a whole. Aaron has made this happen while still planning both the Show Me Chapter and Central States Regional Chapter

  • meetings. His positive attitude and leadership skills

has proven to be a big part of keeping everyone engaged and on track as we work towards holding our summer and fall meetings.

Brian Shanahan (Indiana Chapter)

 Brian has done an excellent job as President of the Indiana Chapter. The Indiana Chapter has increased its membership and interest over the last 3 years when the chapter had been dying off. Local meetings are held at a Company location and thus there are no meeting space costs allowing the chapter to pass down a decrease in cost to attend the meetings and additional interest in reviving the chapter. Brian is always enthusiastic and willing to give it his all in volunteering for IASA.

Chad Stein (Land O Lakes Chapter)

 Chad is currently the President of the Land O Lakes Chapter. He has notably improved the process for which we plan and implement events for the Land O Lakes chapter. For example, he sends out an agenda prior to chapter planning conference calls and sends out an email after the calls to summarize what was discussed and identify responsibilities. This has enhanced accountability for the officers and the program committee members who plan chapter

  • events. He has also been an active participant on the quarterly

chapter officer conference calls by sharing the chapter's experience and inquiring about what other chapters do. During his term as president, he set goals to enhance social media presence and transfer the banking relationship from the chapter to National. Both

  • f these goals have been attained and will provide the chapter the
  • pportunity to increase attendance and enhance efficiencies. Chad

has utilized his collaboration skills by tapping into the chapter's past president's experiences and encouraging new ideas from new board members and program committee members. With Chad's contributions, the Land O Lakes Chapter has become more efficient and more inclusive.

Cheri Schmidt (Northern California Chapter)

 Cheri has been member of the Northern California chapter board for several years. Cheri is always a contributor in board meetings. She is extremely dedicated and always enthusiastic. She has been

  • ne of the driving forces, each of the last couple of years in helping

the Northern and Southern California chapters put on a successful regional event. This past December 2017, the regional realized attendance of about 130 with a well reviewed panel of presenters. Cheri took on the thankless task of coordinating speaker presentations, chasing and collecting speaker slides and bios. She also was responsible for coordinating the preparation and printing

  • f programs which included session materials and information on

all the vendors, speakers, and sponsors.

Chris Chandler (Sunshine Chapter)

 Chris worked really hard to put on a great program for our first Florida regional event. He found great speakers for all sessions and put on a program that was FL specific and everyone loved the

  • content. He was able to take on more and really lead his committee

even when changes happened. He was great to work with!

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Dennis Loveridge (Central IL Chapter)

 Dennis didn’t always play it safe. He swung for the

  • fences. Since the prior year’s Conference had a great

panel discussion of high-level executives, Dennis thought that having TWO panel discussions of high-level executives would be even greater! (quite frankly, corralling that many high-level executives and keeping them on the same page was a bit like herding cats, but Dennis was on it!) He was always appreciative of the hard work put in by so many others. Dennis shared all the glory and yet accepted responsibility for anything that was less than expected.

Gemma Halpin-Koch (Sunshine Chapter)

 Gemma did a great job taking on a committee chair role for our first Florida regional event with no prior experience. She had a positive attitude and helped out where ever needed. We were able to fill up our exhibitor and sponsorships well in advance of the

  • meeting. Excited to be workig with her again this year.

Heather Taylor-Wagnon (Texas Chapter)

 Heather is a Past President having served last year as President

  • f the Texas Chapter and a current board member. I view

Heather as my mentor helping me advance through the

  • chapter. Heather is an outstanding leader keeping our Chapter
  • n track and working with all Board members to produce the

highest quality conferences we can produce. She has an excellent working knowledge of the various chapter functions and was a guide and mentor to me and still is in helping me

  • progress. Heather is patient and knows how to get the job

done and keep a meeting on subject and moving to conclusion. A quality individual dedicated to the success of the IASA Texas Chapter.

Jeff Mleziva (Metro NY/NJ Chapter)

 Jeff only recently started with the Metro NY/NJ Chapter in the past six months. Immediately, he showed interest in being a very active part of the chapter. While only a Board Member at Large, Jeff wanted to take the lead on setting up a new venue for our upcoming golf outing and seminar. The idea was floated to hold the event at Top Golf, a golf entertainment center, rather than a traditional golf course. He jumped into action and contacted the venue to get pricing and logistics. Within days, Jeff presented to the rest of the Board a good idea of how the event would work at the location and what the prices would be. He's been very responsive to getting answers to the questions about the event and ultimately got the contract finalized and signed quickly. Without Jeff's efforts, we would have never gotten this new idea off the ground so quickly, if at all. It's obvious after such a short time that Jeff's spirit and volunteerism is the type that's needed to take our chapter to the next level. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with him and to see what other new ideas he'll help to launch!

Jerry Ravi (Metro NY/NJ Chapter)

 Jerry has been the president of the Metro NY/NJ chapter for 3 years - a year longer than typical for our chapter. He stepped up because there was no one else available to take the helm that had not already held the position. Even though he is a partner at his accounting firm, he still finds the time to organize our meetings and keep us on track. He cares deeply about the quality of our meetings and does everything he can to help us get the sponsorships we need or to organize and moderate a session when we need a session moderator, and basically does whatever it takes to helps us be successful. He has been a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the Chapter, and will not be one that 'drops out of sight' after doing his stint as president. Jerry has been nominated in the past for this award (and come very close to winning), and definitely deserves the recognition.

Kelly Lutinski (Rocky Mountain Chapter)

 We are trying to relaunch the Rocky Mountain Chapter. Kelly has the fun job of trying to herd a group of volunteers who are new to this process and who are trying to get through year end reporting. She's been good at scheduling our update meetings, sending reminders and task lists, and making sure we are somewhat on track for our soft launch. I appreciate Kelly taking a step up and doing all she can to support this launch.

Kit Kovacs (Indiana Chapter)

 Kit always steps up to the plate. She rarely misses meetings and always is quick to volunteer for important tasks. She often provides great suggestions as well. The Indiana chapter would not be successful without her!

Lane Miller (Carolinas Chapter)

 Lane Miller has served as the president of the Carolinas Chapter IASA for the past 2 years. The Carolinas Chapter puts on 2 conferences a year. Lane is heavily involved in the planning and has worked to manage the budget and increase attendance. Lane also ensures we have great speakers at the event.

Mike Graham (Mid-South Chapter)

 Mike took the lead at the recent Mid-South Chapter conference in October. Mike was the Chapter president this year and took care of all of the plans for conference in Nashville. Mike had a great agenda and attendance was great and sponsorship was great. Mike was able to work his unique personality into the conference making it a fun event as well as educational.

Natalie Schoolcraft (Ohio Chapter)

 Natalie was key to the success of Spring conference and she managed the key organizational responsibilities. In addition, she

  • rganized an outstanding pre-conference dinner with sponsors and

chapter officers and helped coordinate the exhibitors. Overall, Natalie worked hard to make sure the events we organized are successful and inspired everyone of us despite the busy schedule she had.

slide-23
SLIDE 23

#IASA2018

23

Patty Warmbrodt (Show-Me Chapter)

 Patty continuously steps up the plate to help out the

  • chapter. She has volunteered year after year to

serve as an officer, and does so to help continue to ensure we are able to execute effectively on the IASA mission for Missouri. In addition, no matter what type of event that we are planning, you can count on her to be some part of the planning or execution phase, or both. We would be a much less successful chapter were it not for her passion and drive to continue to help propel us forward. It has been a privilege to get to know her and work with her the few years since joining the chapter, and I look forward to many more.

Rachel Perlmutter (Sunshine Chapter)

 Rachel volunteered to spearhead a joint Florida chapter

  • conference. Her leadership and personality encouraged

all committee chairs to get involved and work towards the common goal of forming one chapter in Florida. Rachel had never done anything like this before. As you know, this meeting was a huge hit. The speakers were knowledgeable and relevant to the issues facing Florida

  • insurers. The venue was great. Rachel participated on

nearly every call, coordinated the hotel, found speakers, and most importantly made it happen. For 2018, she will be the President of the newly formed Florida Chapter of IASA and we all look forward to working with her.

Stephen Nikander (Southern California Chapter)

 Steve was the chapter Treasurer this past year. He was one of the more active volunteers on the chapter board. He was instrumental in the organization and execution of the California Regional Meeting in December 2017, particularly in his help to line up

  • vendors. In his travels, he also visited other chapter meetings

bringing those experiences to help benefit our chapter. He was very helpful in drumming up attendance to the Chapter's Sip and Paint networking event in the summer, bring in one large local company that had not attended chapter events in many years.

 In order for us to continue to provide CPE credits for all events we have to comply with NASBA guidelines. What we need from you before your event:

  • Recommended CPE credit
  • Earn up to __ CPE Credits. You provide this upon opening registration with agenda.
  • Refund Policy and Cancellation Policy
  • Example: Requests for refunds must be received in writing 10 working days prior to the event to

receive a full refund. No refunds will be granted after that date. Send all requests to agurganus@iasa.org.

  • Consider having a cancellation fee. The small credit card charge for registration and processing

the refund will be taken out of the meeting close.

  • Program Description
  • The program will be an overview of the subject matter outlined in detail for each session.
  • Learning Objectives
  • You must list 3 objectives per session – what knowledge will the attendee walk away with?
  • Speaker Bio
  • We must have a speaker bio for each speaker – does not have to be lengthy but should speak to

why they are an “expert” for a particular session.

  • Ethics speakers should include whether speaking on Regulatory or Behavioral Ethics and their

qualifications to speak on this topic.

 CPE Certification is on the way to an electronic self-sufficient process.

  • We are currently reviewing vendors which will allow the individual to generate and

print their own CPE certificate of attendance for group-live events.

  • The programming would allow each individual upon registration on the IASA Chapter

website, to choose all session titles with times.

  • After signing in each session at the Chapter event, the individual would sign back in

the IASA website, certify that they attended each session by way of electronic

  • signature. IASA National is then able to approve upon review, via electronic signature.
  • This will prompt the individual to print their CPE certificate and any other documents

needed for CPE.

  • Once this new programming is in place, we will need all session titles finalized for

all Chapter meetings offering CPE before we can open your meeting for online

  • registration. We currently already need the session titles finalized upon opening

registration for meetings with tracked sessions.

Background  MI chapter sought to broaden interest, appeal, and attendance by creating a technology presence at annual chapter conferences.  The basic rationale was the recognition of the reality that technology and accounting/finance (and every other business process) were essentially joined at the hip.  The ability to improve cross-disciplinary understanding, knowledge, and partnering would benefit member companies and their Finance and IT people.

Hot Topics – Open Discussion

IT Track for Chapter Meetings & Regional Conferences

slide-45
SLIDE 45

#IASA2018

45

Background  Additional benefit of increasing potential sponsorships by including IT related solution providers.  A plan was created to introduce technology topics at meetings – slowly at first to be able to review and adjust – and increase the number of tech topics until it became its own track with CPE credits earned for attending.  MI chapter board members, IASA staff, and MI chapter membership were all involved in thinking through the right approach for accomplishing.

#IASA2018

46

 MI chapter had the advantage of a board member with an IT background who could drive the initiative – but that's just an advantage, not a limitation.  Started by suggesting that topics that had strong crossover appeal to both IT and Finance. For instance:

 Business Intelligence, Analytics, Data, Modeling  Financial and Accounting system vendors and assessments  Systems Development 101  Core System Updates – Policy & Claims  Latest trends in Mobile Technology  Finance & Accounting Technologies & Trends  Effective Project Planning/Agile Methodology  How to speak to IT people

 Keynote was always a CIO/CFO panel to begin or end conference day; helped to drive the message home about the linkage of IT to business strategies and success

Plan

 Began recruiting speakers from member-company IT staffs, solution providers, and other subject matter experts. The benefit to speakers was the opportunity to tell their stories – exposure for companies and providers. However, the presentations had to be centered on the technology topic and the benefits/experiences derived, not on marketing and sales.  Created attendance incentives by offering a 2 for 1 discount: if you brought an “IT buddy” from your company you both could attend the conference for the price of one.  Used social media to market the technology topics heavily via membership, and encouraged solution provider presenters to market to their clients and extended networks.

SLIDE 48

#IASA2018

48

Plan  As conference approached, included presentation previews and promos as part of general email and social media communication and marketing for the conferences.  Scheduled technology track concurrent with other sessions but tried where possible to avoid heavy attendance CPE sessions, i.e. Tax Update, so that finance/accounting people could attend tech sessions if desired.  Pre-conference session surveys indicated positive responses to tech topics. We used the surveys to adjust content to feature the topics that were of most interest to the membership.

49

Results  The first conference that included a technology session was a little rough as the attendees weren’t quite sure about the topics and how it applied to them or their companies.  However, the CFO/CIO panel discussions were very well attended and we used them as a way to promote the business and technology value of the IT track.  We also made the technology track presentations available to the membership and encouraged them to share them with their IT colleagues in their companies.

50

Results  The sharing of presentations, the honing in on the most preferred topics, and the CFO/CIO panel discussions provided dividends the next year.  The technology track attendance was greatly improved. In the first year it was

  • ffered, there was was an average attendance of 18.7 people across 5 sessions. In

the second year, the average attendance increased to 27.9 attendees across six sessions – a number we thought respectable for breakout sessions.

#IASA2018

51

Results  In year three we did even better with about a 10% increase in attendees and sponsors across six technology track sessions. Part of that increase was that by year three we began to get more IT people from member companies who were interested in attending the IT sessions on their own merit.  Year four stayed about the same and the IT track is now seen as a “normal” part

  • f the MI chapter’s conference agendas.

52

Lessons Learned  Introducing an IT track has to be couched in the context of the mutual benefit to Finance and IT people at member companies. Since technology is a part of every business process now, it just makes sense to create a dialogue at IASA chapter conferences that can improve business and IT understanding and relationships.  Be prepared to adjust content to the preferences of potential attendees. Create a survey/feedback loop to stay on top of this.  Use incentives and discounts where possible and practical to jump start IT track attendance.

Lessons Learned  Where possible try to encourage presentations where a Finance and IT person present together. Experiences from a recent implementation, project, or other initiative are popular topics for attendees.  Use social media networking platforms to get the word out on the IT track.  Create a CIO/CFO panel discussion as part of the general conference agenda to underscore the importance and relevance of IT and Finance connection.  Keep at it!  Chapter Officer Webinar – Adding IT Tracks to your Meetings
