 Mentoring occurs when a senior person, in

terms of age and experience undertakes to provide information, advice and emotional support for a younger person (the protégé’) in a relationship lasting over and extended period of time and marked by substantial emotional commitment by both parties.

 (Bowen, 1985)

 “An experienced and prudent adviser”  Sage  Teacher - Instructor  Coach  Counselor  These are all nouns  So, what do mentors do?

 Derived from Greek mythology, appeared in

Homer’s The Odyssey. Mentor acted as guide, protector, tutor and advisor to Telemachus.

 Mentor acted as helper, teacher, advisor and

inspiration

 For the purposes of this discussion, we will

talk about nurses in formal leadership roles, particularly Nurse Managers

 Not the clinical expert any more  Don’t know what they don’t know  Fear of that unknown  Information overload  Unreasonable expectations of self  Relationship changes  What else???

 Arrive at work at 0630 to talk with night staff  They are too busy to talk, and there have been 3 call-ins

for next shift

 At 0830, a patient falls, just as you are leaving for your

nursing leadership team meeting

 1100, an unhappy family asks to speak with you. You are

applying finishing touches to a PA to be delivered at 1400

 After talking with the family, you attempt lunch at noon

when you are paged by an engineering staff about the repair request you made

 You skip lunch b/c you have a 1300 meeting with your

leader…..and you are overspent (again) on staffing budget, even though productivity is at 110%.

 And what are the thoughts rolling around in your head???

 From Latin, resilire, to jump back  Buoyant, elastic, springy  Rebounding  Springing back  Possessing power of quick recovery  …especially of mind

 How do YOU

YOU stay personally resilient?

 To keep from falling  To bear weight of  To sustain  To encourage  To furnish with a means of living  Advocacy  The one who, or that which supports  Resiliency may be related to genetics and

neurobiology but…

 Begins with internal locus of control leading

to sense of agency, increasing management

  • f stress

 Importance of self efficacy, competence and

coping

 Social and community variables: family,

mentors, community resources

 “Nature vs Nurture”?

 From Peplau, 1989  “Somewhere, somehow, at some time in the

past, courageous nurses determined these skills, learned them, fought for the right to use them, refined them, and taught them to

  • ther nurses. All nurses have an obligation

to remember that part of nursing’s past, and to keep their own skills in pace with new

  • pportunities for nursing into the next

century.”

 What new Nurse Leader needs your mentoring

and support to develop resiliency and to grow professionally?

 Let’s work together to develop a plan
