ARCTIC INTERACTIONS:

Coupling of nature and human responses to understand and mitigate global change (ArcI) The Arctic is changing rapidly (climate change, land use, tourism, extraction of natural resources, transport and demographic changes). This will have substantial and cascading consequences for Arctic ecosystems and human societies. Interdisciplinary research is needed on biological-earth and social sciences and sustainable systems, resource use and development. This is also essential for input to policies, planning and decision making processes in the Arctic. ArcI will establish an internationally leading center on interdisciplinary and participatory studies in the Arctic covering complex system and impacts analysis crossing traditional scientific boundaries.

ArcI: Builds on OULU’s unique potential in Arctic research

1. Creates an international and interdisciplinary Arctic research community in OULU 2. Strengthens the co-operation with state research institutes, including joint use of infrastructures, data and field stations 3. Builds further complementarity and collaboration with ULapland and other universities 4. Leads to markedly growing international collaboration and research impact of OULU in pan-Arctic consortiums 5. Strengthens and builds links with stakeholders representing ministries, regional government, indigenous peoples, wildlife services, companies, nature protection groups and others
