Challenges Infrastructure Rural Areas (2):

  • Remote Infrastructure

Costs, Land Ownership, “Right of Way”, Permissions, Infrastructure Sharing

  • Regular Power Outages (“Load Shedding”)
  • Cable, Batteries, Diesel and Equipment Theft
  • Vandalism, Sabotage
  • Protests of Population (Radiation, Land Ownership)
  • Maintenance

Exchange of Batteries, Diesel Supply, Cleaning Solar Panels

“Manatua” Submarine Cable (3,700 km) Samoa – Niue – Cook Islands (Aitutaki and Rarotonga) – French Polynesia (Bora Bora and Tahiti) – RfS: mid of 2020 Financing through Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Investment Bank (EIB) / Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and Government of New Zealand (MFAT) The cable system was only feasible jointly through collaboration of the small islands.

Recommendation:

According UN actual about 3.5 billion people globally have no access to the Internet. Developing Countries need to collaborate and jointly identify their specific requirements (e.g. for Rural / Remote Areas) in short time, and address them to 3GPP to be considered for global 5G standardization and future mobile technologies. For having a strong voice, collaborate with bigger Developing Countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Philippines, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam and the Pacific Islands Telecom Association (PITA) for specific needs of islands and remote islands.
