Research Highlights: Literacy Specialist Model

 The inclusion of a Literacy Specialist should not be perceived as “fixing” teachers, but rather providing an opportunity for providing a student-centered support model that emphasizes student achievement and develops teacher capacity (Sweeney & Harris, 2017).  Literacy Specialists differ from reading specialists. Reading specialists focus on struggling readers, Literacy Specialists emphasize “resource support and leadership” (Bean, Cassidy, Grumet, Shelton, & Wallis, 2002)  The model is “nonthreatening and supportive—not evaluative” (Poglinco, Bach, Hovde, Rosenblum, Saunders, & Supovitz, 003, as cited in International Reading Association, 2004b)  Research supports the effectiveness of a Literacy Specialist model

  • ver the more traditional consultant model for professional

development citing greater impact on student achievement, particularly when these efforts are focused on small groups of teachers (<100 teachers) (Kraft, Blazer, & Hogan, 2016).  In addition, High-performing school districts such as our neighbor, Great Neck, utilize Literacy Specialists as a bridge between Tier I and Tier II curriculum and instruction—collaborating with teachers to provide both support and enrichment for students’ literacy needs. (Personal survey, 2018)
