  6. LOCATION AND SURROUNDING AREA The town of Kyustendil is located 80 km southeast of the capital Sofia, and 20 km from the FYROM (Macedonia) and Serbian borders. The hotel is conveniently positioned at around 110 km from Skopje and 190 km from Thessaloniki. Spa hotel “ Strimon spa club” is situated in close vicinity to three famous ski resorts-Bansko, Borovetz and Vitosha mountain. Location on the map of Bulgaria: http://www.journey.bg/bulgaria/map.php?region=5 HISTORIC EVIDENCE Kyustendil is a famous spa resort, having earned its fame through the centuries. Various legends and monuments suggest that the mineral water flowed freely to the surface for more than 25 centuries. It is the main reason that attracted the attention of the Thracians. As a direct result different villages arose, one of which serves as the basis and birth spot of today's Kyustendil. It is believed that in this region lived mainly two Thracian tribes, which bore the names Paetiand Denthelethae. This occurred at the end of the VI and the beginning of V century BC. The aforementioned tribes are also the founders of the settlements in the region of what currently is known as the Kyustendil area. Until today there have not been any sources indicating its name during this period. Furthermore, the wealth of mineral waters had been greatly appreciated by the Turks, who operated about 20 water sources and built 12 bathrooms, three of which have survived to this day. Of these, only Dervis bathroom, built in 1566, is preserved in its original form and is located within the boundaries of the National architectural and Archaeological reserve "Pautalia-Velbazhd-Kyustendil .”

  7. HISTORIC EVIDENCE It was not until 1910 when on the foundations of the old Turkish baths were built two new bathrooms –the “ Chifte" and the "Alay". They were used or hygiene and spa needs. At this time an organized, urban sanitation aid did not exist. All issues were dealt by a doctor – who acted as a manager of the bathrooms. Yet the city was visited by patients who were treated without showing any medical problems. This can be explained by the very positive effect of the mineral bathrooms. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Kyustendil became famous with the healing quality of its water and attracted thousands Bulgarian spa treatment seekers and resort enthusiasts. Since 1928, balneotherapy, which was limited to a stay in a mineral water pool, was conducted under the supervision of a medical doctor specifically serving this purpose. The city continued to evolve as a spa center. In 1956 was built the House of the working peasants -the predecessor of “ Strimon spa club” . In 1966 the town of Kyustendil was declared a national center, a modern balneotherapy hospital was opened, and several new sanatoriums were built. In a document issued by the Ministry of Health, dated 8 March 1994 the city of Kyustendil is defined as a spa resort of national importance. In its composition property, the mineral water of Kyustendil is sulfuric in nature. The chemical composition of the water shows a very close resemblance to the French spa places Eauxle Bonnes, Bagneresde Luchon, Baregeset cauterets, located in the Pyrenees Mountains.

  8. PREDECESSOR OF SPA HOTEL “STRIMON SPA CLUB” In 1966 the town of Kyustendil was declared a national spa resort, the balneological center was opened, and the House of the working peasants that had been built a few years back transitioned to this national complex. On top of the varying activities that were performed, the home had two separate "internal medicine“ departments, along with "Gynecological diseases and infertility" departments with a 100 beds base. Considering the historical era, the conditions in the sanatorium were excellent and it showed signs of rapid development, with very high rates of occupancy. Most patients were women and families that sought for treatment of infertility. This period is notable for four main factors: • High popularity and a very good therapeutic effect in families with infertility; • High popularity and a very good therapeutic effect in inflammatory gynecological diseases in patients; • Various additional treatments that complemented spa treatment; • Great success in treatment of infertility; The success rate in the treatment of infertility was between 33% -43%, which is both scientifically and statistically proven. In this period, The Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology performed scientific studies on the impact of the properties of mineral water in inflammatory gynecological diseases; in endocrine infertility, where there is absence or rarely occurring menstruation; in men with prostate inflammation. The majority of patients were Bulgarians. Foreigners came from all over Europe, mainly from Germany, Finland, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia and the Middle East.

  10. MINERAL WATER REDOX POTENTIAL (ORP) Definition : “Reduction potential is a measure of chemical activity of elements or their compounds in reversible chemical processes associated with the ion charge change in solutions”. In popular language, it means that ORP, also called redox potential (RedOx – Reduction /Oxidation), characterizes the activity rate of electrons in reduction/oxidation processes, i.e. reactions associated with the sharing or transfer of electrons. ORP for each reduction/oxidation reaction is measured by a complex formula, in millivolts (mV). It may have a minus or a plus sign (“+” or “ - “). It is measured using an ORP meter. In natural water, ORP’s value varies from -400 to +700 mV, and determines all oxidation and reduction processes in it. In equilibrium conditions, ORP’s sign characterizes the water environment. ORP’s value allows us to draw some general conclusions about the chemical composition of water. Depending on ORP’s sign, there are several main situations occurring in natural waters: 1. Oxidation – with + sign from 100 to 150 mV. It characterizes the presence of free oxygen in the water, and a number of chemical elements with absolute valence (Fe3+, Mo 6+, As 5-,V5+, U 6+, Sr 4+, Cu 2+, Pb 2+). 2. Transitional oxidation/reduction –determined by ORP’s value from 0 to +100 мВ , unstable geochemical condition and variable content of hydrogen sulphide and oxygen. In these conditions, there is a slight oxidation and a slight recovery of the metals. 3. Reduction - ORP’s sign is below 0. Typical for waters with the presence of metals with low valence (Fe2+, Mn2+, Mo4+, V4+, U4+) , and hydrogen sulphide. ORP is interrelated with pH and depends on the temperature.

  11. MINERAL WATER IMPORTANCE OF ORP ORP of most types of water available to people (tap water, well water, bottled water) is from +100 to +400 mV. The water with high healing properties and from regions with long livers usually has a negative ORP. ORP of the internal environment of a healthy human body is always negative , from 0 to -200 mV. This means that when there’s water with positive ORP in the body, you spend energy on its absorption in order to restore ORP to necessary levels. If ORP of the water is close to the ORP of the body, it is absorbed immediately because it enters the cell easily. If the ORP of the water is more negative than the body’s ORP, the water provides the cells with additional energy and antioxidant protection. ORP values, mV • Arterial blood -70 • Venous blood -57 • Internal environment of a healthy human body -70 • Freshly squeezed juice -30 to-70 • Freshly squeezed juice after 1-day storage of fruits +50 to+100 • Spring water in regions with long livers +30 to+70 • Tap water +220 to+380 • Bottled water +210 to+400 • Optimum environment for maximum spermmotility -130 • Optimum environment for beneficial bacteria growth +50 to-200 • Mother’s milk -70
