  3. WELCOME MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN, SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Air Commodore BA Yakasai psc FSS MSS DSS mni Chairman, Congress Scientific Committee It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the 39 th World Congress on Military Medicine, holding at Abuja between 20 and 25 November, 2011. This congress which is a biennial event of the International Committee on Military Medicine (ICMM) represents a landmark in the practice of military medicine in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa as a whole. As the greatest gathering of military medical professionals in the world, it provides good opportunity for learning, networking and fostering international understanding. The Scientific Committee has for this congress reviewed over 250 papers, of these some have been selected for oral presentation, while others are for poster at this congress. It is my belief that the selected papers would generate quality intellectual discussions that are consistent with the theme of our congress ‘Military Medicine and Disaster Management’. This Abstracts Book represents the collection of abstracts selected on merit for both oral and poster presentations. The academic input of all the authors is hereby recognized and appreciated. On behalf of the Scientific Committee, I wish to acknowledge the tremendous support and assistance that we have enjoyed from Maj Gen Marcel Merlin, the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the ICMM and other officials. I am aware that this year also marks the 90 th Anniversary of the ICMM, let me join the Central Organising Committee of the 39 th World Congress on Military Medicine in congratulating all member countries for this landmark achievement. That this celebration is holding at Abuja, to me is quite fortuitous. Finally, let me wish you all very fruitful deliberations and best of your stay in Abuja, Nigeria. 5

  4. Goodwill Message from Chairman Scientific Council Major General (MD, Prof, ret) Marcel Merlin Chairman, Scientific Council, International Committee on Military Medicine We are now very close to the opening ceremony of the thirty-nine World Congress on Military Medicine, to be held in Abuja, capital town of Nigeria. Its scientific preparation has been a long and complex process of cooperation between the Congress Organising Committee and the Secretariat General of the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM). Finally, 141 of the submitted abstracts have been selected for oral presentations and poster exhibition. In the name of the Scientific Council of the ICMM, I should like to express our gratitude to all the actors of this common achievement. We have appreciated the decision of the Congress Scientific Committee of re-centering the topics of the congress on one of the core components of military medicine. The main topic of the congress, Military Medicine and Disaster Management, gives the opportunity to address four themes (High Casualty Environments, Mental Health, Humanitarian Operations and Infections of Military Significance) that are of permanent topicality for military health personnel involved in medical support of troops deployed in crisis areas. We have also appreciated the choice of the Transcorp Hilton Congress Hall that will provide an extraordinary favourable environment to all the participants of the congress. We hope that this congress will be a successful scientific event. 6
