IDEALLY LOCATED ON THE COURS PIERRE PUGET IN THE HEART OF MARSEILLE, THE C2 HOTEL, WHICH BEARS THE INITIALS OF ITS ARCHITECT FOUNDERS CLAIRE FATOSME AND CHRISTIAN LEFÈVRE, OPENED IN THE SPRING OF 2014. Dating from the end of the 19th century, the building is full of character and has a rich history, having been home to the same Marseille family for almost a century. The mansion was then converted into offices before being purchased by the SOFEA company in 2009. It was then that Claire Fatosme and Christian Lefèvre moved in and the C2 project began, along with a new destiny brilliantly outlined by the pair and soon to be given form by the staff and the guests themselves. This demanding and, sometimes, seemingly irrational project sparked enthusiasm all-round. Talented artists and designers came together to form a team support and then lead the architects in designing the project in its minutest detail. Two years’ work was needed to adapt the building to its new purpose, reorganize the spaces, add a floor, dig the new patio and sublimate the premises’ original elegance.

ARCHITECTS STATEMENT

  • CONCEPT
  • TO BEGIN WITH, THE ARCHITECTS WANTED

TO MAKE THIS BEAUTIFUL BUILDING, UNTIL NOW THE SOLE PROPERTY OF ITS OWNERS, ACCESSIBLE TO ALL, WITNESS AS IT IS OF A LITTLE-KNOWN MARSEILLE FAR-REMOVED FROM THE USUAL CLICHÉS, EVEN THOUGH THE EXTRAVAGANCE OF ITS DECORATION CANNOT HIDE THE BUILDING’S MEDITERRANEAN HERITAGE. They wanted to turn the beautifully preserved rooms into living areas that were, at last, accessible. The former reception rooms are now a bar and lounge. The imposing grand staircase has been left open to the public. With its columns, bronze balustrade and 12 Paolo Rizzatto chandeliers, the staircase will provide a stunning backdrop for future exhibitions and concerts. They also chose to leave visible the marks of time. The rooms, decorative features and surviving frescoes have undergone only sparing restoration. Damage has been left apparent: channels cut into the brick walls, holes in the stonework frames remain. No effort has been made to reconstruct what has been destroyed: no fake moldings, no phony patina, no mock 19th century. The design of the new spaces is resolutely

  • contemporary. The materials are modern:

concrete, weathering steel, glass, green walls. The furniture has either been designed by the architects in contemporary materials such as Corian, glass, stainless steel or sourced from talented -and often radical- designers in collaboration with our furnishings supplier, RBC. It is from this overt, coherent and constant

  • pposition between past and present that the C2

spirit was born.

SLIDE 5
  • PHYLOSOPHY
  • THE C2 IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER HOTEL;

DESIGNED AS A SPACE OF FREEDOM, FOR LIVING, EXCHANGING AND SHARING, IT IMPARTS WITH SINGULAR APTNESS THE STANDARDS OF AN INTERNATIONAL-CLASS HOTEL. Here, stereotypes, labels and codes are prohibited in favor of a certain lightness, free expression, an

  • penness
  • n the world... An exceptional address therefore,

decidedly free and in perpetual movement, that gracefully blends luxury and simplicity, extravagance and discretion, the exclusive and the accessible. The staff members, of different backgrounds and nationalities, reflect this blend, each one expressing his

  • r her own uniqueness. United in their desire to attend

to your every need, they create the exceptional with dedication and sincerity.

  • An artistic and

cultural dimension

  • Located at the heart of a city named European

Capital of Culture in 2013, the C2 aims to contribute to the emergence of a new «Cultural Marseille». To this end, each month the hotel will host art and photographic exhibitions and performances. This showcasing of talented artists will attract connoisseurs and art lovers, making the hotel both art gallery and inspirational stage. The program of music will also be appreciated, with an intentionally eclectic mix of the best of classical music, jazz and electro. Concerts and DJ sets will be

  • rganized
  • n weekday evenings and at weekends... And

impromptu piano recitals are welcomed from any budding or established pianists - the grand piano awaits them at the bottom of the staircase.

  • ROOMS
  • ROOMS
  • The 20rooms occupy five floors.

On each landing, two armchairs by Rietvelt and chairs by Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer, Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Rennie Mackintosh recall the pioneer architects

  • f the modernist movement born at the start of the 20th

century, just a few dozen years after the building housing the C2 was constructed. The light and spacious rooms, almost all different, offer comfort and refinement while retaining a certain simplicity. The decoration is tasteful and subdued, with wood and white Corian units of a reduced height that accentuates the rooms’ high ceilings. The mood is peaceful, yet warm: sections of brick wall, highly elaborate lighting and surprising carpeting designed by Guy Bargin and featuring superimposed images of old walls and re-worked aerial views of Marseille that aptly replaces the C2 Hotel in its local and historical context. The few pieces of furniture have been carefully sourced and include works by famous designers such as Antonio Citterio, Patricia Urquiola, the Campana brothers, Arne Jabobsen and Ron Arad to name just a few. On the 4th floor, the two «Prestige» rooms each feature a sunny balcony with unhindered views

  • f Notre-Dame de la Garde. Unforgettable

breakfasts guaranteed. These two rooms also have a steam shower and a TV screen set in the wall above the bathtub for the ultimate lazy weekend. At ground-floor level, there is just one room. Impressive in size, it is in fact a former parlor. The angels and birds painted on the paneled ceiling, the huge fireplace with its pitted mirror are vestiges of its past. As a reminder of Marseille’s former days as the gateway to the East, a large four-poster bed with liana posts by the Campana brothers and a Patricia Urquiola «Mister Africa» armchair complete the furnishing

THE SOUTH -FACING TERRACE IS THE BAR THIS VERY VERTICAL SPACE IS TAKEN UP IN PART BY THREE CEILING LIGHTS BY INGO MAURER IN STEEL, PAPER AND GOLD LEAF THAT PROVIDE A WARM LIGHT. The light, white Corian bar contrasts with the original molded panels. Behind the bar, a mirror simply resting on the white marble mantelpiece counterbalances the lounge mirror on the opposite wall. Two magnificent sliding doors testify to the ingeniousness

  • f the 19th century’s craftsmen.

The lounge, in the former main reception room, is still the building’s prestige space and focal point. The original ceiling is finely crafted, with gold moldings framing an aerial fresco representing a circle of angels against a blue sky. The Marseille artist Agnès Canu gives wings to the main reception room, opening windows onto the sky through her six wall panels. In the center of the room, a large chandelier made of polycarbonate Fresnel lenses, a modern take on the traditional chandelier, acts as a 21st-century counterpoint to the 19th-century surroundings; likewise, the modern furniture: the great marble table by Enio Saarinen and Charles Eames chairs. It is in this setting that you will enjoy your Mariage Frères, your house cocktail, your organic beer

  • r your glass of wine from the Domaine de Sulauze, a winery
  • wned by Guillaume Lefèvre, the proprietor’s nephew.

The hotel offers a wide range of quality refreshments for breakfast and tea plus a selection of finger foods, a tasty alternative to the traditional meal. Wine connoisseurs have not been forgotten, far from it, with an extensive cellar of around a hundred quality wines. At the first glimpse of the sun’s rays, the sheltered terraces at the foot of the vertical garden provide a haven of peace and quiet, despite the closeness of the city center. On Sunday, the open-air brunch will make it feel like a real holiday. Lastly, a conference room at the hotel overlooks the cours Pierre Puget. Designed to host meetings, seminars and working breakfasts, the room has all the equipment required for a successful meeting. The impressive, bright red ceiling light gives the conference room its name: the Red Bulle Meeting Room. This premium venue can be privatized on request.
