Site Issues

  • Main issues
  • How to achieve performance on constrained site
  • How to maintain performance on constrained site
  • How to be a good neighbour in revitalised area
  • Approach to answering these issues
  • Integrated team
  • Compliance planning
  • Stakeholder engagement

Process Drivers

  • New Total Nitrogen Permit
  • UWWTR - 15 mg/l Annual Average (70% Removal)
  • WRA - 15mg/l Annual Average
  • Adherence with existing Permit from Historic Limitation
  • FFT 427 l/s
  • Inlet Screen performance
  • Catchment Population Growth to 73000 pe
  • Historic Odour Nuisance - new limits set to 1.5 ouE/m3 at nearest property
  • Pre-requisite planning condition for regeneration and site

Membrane Technology

  • Hollow fibre ultrafiltration MBR. Air and chemicals

are used for cyclical cleaning of the filters. ▪ Pore sizes (0.03 µm) small enough to retain Bacteria & Viruses as well as solids.

  • Treatment performance is already significantly
  • utperforming the Permit Conditions
  • ~5 mg/l BOD vs. Target 25 mg/l
  • ~5mg/l SS vs. Target 60 mg/l
  • ~15mg/l Nitrogen vs. Target 15 mg/l or 75%

removal

  • Nitrogen removal on target for meeting standards
  • nce optimised following sludge plant

Summary

▪ Use of BNR and MBR at Woolston has enabled us to achieve high performance already before completion on very constrained site. ▪ Digital engineering / BIM key to success in planning complex temporary and permanent works. ▪ Without stakeholder support the project would have been unbuildable and vastly more expensive solutions would have been required.
