  6. Induction Day Children are to walk to Swanmead in the morning where they will come to the hall. Each tutor will be ready to welcome you on that morning. After enjoying a day of discovery and excitement children who are currently year 4s at Greenfylde, you will be walked back to Greenfylde to meet your adults at the end of the school day there. If you currently attend a different school, like Shepton Beauchamp or Ilton then we ask that your parents drop you off in the morning and collect you at the end of both induction days.

  9. Getting to and from school… The majority of pupils are likely to walk to school and can access the school site through the yellow gates near the Tesco car park or walk around the side of the school as if they were walking to Cygnets. Children arriving early can play on the KS2 playground and wait for the bell. Mr McMeakin will then invite them in. Next to this playground is where the bike and scooter rack is located.

  10. Getting to and from school… Buses drop the children off at the front of the school and the children are expected to walk around by the Cygnets entrance. If you are unaware of where your pick up point is in your local community please ask an existing parent/carer of a Swanmead pupil. At the end of the day children taking a bus home are to wait in lines in the hall ready to be dismissed by a member of staff.

  11. Mobile Phones Some parents/carers may deem it appropriate for their child to have a mobile phone for the walk to and from school. All mobile phones must be switched off and handed in to the office at the start of the school day. This is where they can be collected for the walk home. A permission slip must be completed in order for us to allow your child to bring a phone to school.

  12. Locker Rooms In September you will be notified about the cost and availability of lockers for the new academic year. All year 5 children will, as was the case in their first schools, have a drawer and a peg to keep their belongings in one place. Phones will be handed in at reception at the beginning of each day.

  13. Moving around the school… For many of your lessons there are dedicated learning spaces. This means you will be moving around the school on a daily basis. In order for the flow of pupils to move efficiently there are some basic rules for everyone: • No running – ever. • Walk on the left. • Walk quietly. • Line up outside the room you are visiting . A hard shelled folder is ideal as inevitably on occasion things are dropped.

  14. Lunchtimes In year 5 children are invited into the school hall to have their lunches first. Both cooked and packed lunches eat at the same time. The hall is then required for the older year groups so please don’t spend the whole hour eating. Cooked dinners cost approximately £2.50 for a main course and a dessert. The canteen works in a style whereby you do not need to pre-order food. There is a water dispenser located at the back of the hall at all times.

  15. School Menu Menus refresh seasonally – any GF/dietary requirements please alert the school

  16. Attendance, Medical needs and HUB… The School’s pupil absence number for voicemails is: 01460 52431 and choose option 1. Details of the pupil’s illness must be given. Medical plans for children with conditions requiring a long term plan of action. Also, Mrs Harvey can develop short term plans for children requiring them such as a broken collar bone. The HUB is a place which allows children to have a quiet safe space within school where they can share any SEMH issues . This area is also used to develop social skills, coping strategies associated with change and is a bridge between school and home life.

  17. Extra-Curricular Clubs Most clubs run at lunchtime from 1:30-2:00pm . A few clubs run after school. These are attended by those invited to do so by staff members e.g. play rehearsals and homework club. A homework club runs every lunchtime in the library. Clubs on offer are updated termly.

  18. Epraise This is our rewards system at Swanmead. Points are given by any member of staff in response to positive behaviour and learning choices. Accolades are special badges awarded to the children for completing a specific challenge. Each half term a reward day is created to celebrate the achievements of each pupil. These rewards can include: The wearing of non- school Uniform, An afternoon at the park or a visit off the school site.

  19. Planners… Planners are the most important book your child will be given as they start Swanmead. It is used as a primary method of communication. You may want to let us know that “Billy” has lost a P.E sock, and we can reply letting you know it has been found. To ensure all messages are seen by both tutors and parents/carers we ask that the planner is signed weekly . The planner is also a place for the children to record their homework. This includes the four separate pieces of reading that has to take place with an adult present across the week. We ask that each piece of reading is signed as evidence of it actually taking place. At the back of each planner is a selection of pages that are aimed at helping with homework tasks. Over the year each pupil will grow their own personalised spelling list.

  20. Planners continued… The planner is also the place for children to record important school information. School passwords for logging onto a computer and passwords for external websites such as MyMaths and TTrockstars will be recorded in their planners. A school day timetable will be found in the planner, this may help you when writing a note alerting us to the fact that “Billy” may miss art because of a dental appointment. On the first day the children will be given their own personal timetable . This, along with a map , will help your children find where they need to go. One of the first tasks we ask everyone to complete is the signing of the pupil- home-school agreement . When this is signed we know that all children are attending school ready to learn with a supportive network of adults behind them.

  21. Homework There will be a maximum of three pieces of work per week from your tutor. This usually comprises of: 1) Reading to an adult on four separate occasions a week, and having these signed in the planner. 2) A set of weekly spellings that have been studied in class the children are to choose the 4 tasks they complete and learn the set of spelling words. 3) An online maths activity to consolidate learning that has taken place in the classroom. All children are given a week to complete these tasks. On occasion your child may be given an additional piece of homework from a subject teacher.

  22. Uniform Uniform requirements are in the planner. Uniform can be purchased from the school and Mrs Mcgowan, who runs the uniform office, is available Monday and Wednesdays until 4:00pm. The PE kit is available to buy from Harriman's – a clothes shop in the centre of town.

  23. Equipment List • There is an essential list found in the planner. Purple Polishing Pens (used to edit our work) will be given to every child by their tutor. A static rotatory pencil sharpener will be available in every classroom. No other pencil sharpeners are permissible.

  24. Osmington Bay

  25. Thank you for listening • Soon we invite you all to come and have a look around your new tutor bases. • This is when parents and carers can have an informal a relatively brief chat regarding any issues or questions they would like to raise. • If you think you’d require a longer face to face discussion about your child starting next year please ask your child’s tutor to arrange a time in the near future.
