ESM Workflow

execution of experiment

preparation of experiment

data distribution/ data publication data management

prepare model prepare workflow components define experiment prepare configuration prepare computation resource prepare restarts and time- dependant inputs experiment execution handling restart and log files archiving of raw data and restart files post-processing incl. CMOR/M1 QC in-house quality control archiving of products initiate data publishing process incl. HDH/M2 QC provide information for data access portal (e.g. ESGF) provide information for facetted search and data access interface analysis by community adapt/optimize dynamics and physics

  • ptimize usability

adapt/optimize site/machine start end provide errata/update information model run model batch job

Yellow activities require interaction with the user. Purple activities do not require any interaction with the user.

general workflow of the climate model data production process

Green activities are external to the workflow.

Three Intense Days:
 My Personal Conclusions

  • My Conclusions:

–Everything is work(flow)! – ….. and it is hard to get a handle on it! –MD is at the core –Automatable? –Manual? –Reproducibility with

  • stochastic processors?
  • Million-way parallelism?

–We need new ideas! –DAGs? –Balaji:

  • Expressing entire workflow as graphs (DAGs).

–Maximize parallelism across the entire graph –Minimize graph traversal during fault recovery
