  1. WILDFIRE RISK REDUCTION GRANT PROGRAM The Wildfire Risk Reduction Program for Rural Communities was established in 2005 under the National Fire Plan to assist communities throughout New Mexico in reducing their risk from wildland fire. The New Mexico Association of Counties (NMAC), a nonprofit community foundation, has partnered with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to administer the program and distribute awards. The program targets communities at-risk of wildfire by offering seed money to local governments, tribal entities, and non-profits for preparing Community Wildfire Protection Plans, conducting fuel treatments, and providing outreach and education. 110 grants have been awarded since 2005 for a total of $3,041,235 to include:  21 Community Wildfire Protection Plans  6 Community Wildfire Protection Plan Updates  45 Outreach and Education Grants with Over 2,803 Outreach Activities  38 Fuel Grants with Over 2,615 Acres Treated BLM FIELD OFFICE PROJECTS Through the BLM/NMAC partnership funds can also be used for BLM field office identified projects. By using the existing assistance agreement, the process is streamlined and NMAC is able to serve as a fiscal agent for multiple local government and non-profit stakeholders. 32 BLM field office projects have been completed since 2005 for a total of $1,015,162. WILDLAND URBAN INTERFACE (WUI) SUMMIT For the past four years, the BLM/NMAC partnership facilitates an annual Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Summit. During the summit, field experts provide information on the social aspects of fire, fire adaptive communities, smoke management, emergency response, and a weather outlook from the National Weather Service in preparation for the upcoming fire season. Three separate educational tracks are provided for community members, fire and emergency response personnel, and local leadership. The summit includes a collaborative planning committee of NMAC, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, State Forestry, and State Land Office personnel.
