Widening Participation staff are impartial and have no involvement in the

  • utcome of applications. Widening Participation staff cannot:

1. Influence the outcome of applications (we can only provide references)

  • 2. Guarantee interview or acceptance at GSA
  • 3. Explain why applicants have been unsuccessful in their application.

Pupils should mention WP activity in their personal statement. It be brief and broad, something like: “I have taken part in all Widening Participation activities at GSA this year and they have really helped me to understand what the Painting and Printmaking course will really be like. I feel confident about working both independently and collaboratively at art school having completed these activities.”

It is helpful for teachers to include in their reference the applicants context, for example: “Whitehill Secondary is one of GSA’s target FOCUS West Schools, meaning Joe Bloggs has received support from the GSA Widening Participation department in the last academic year. Joe has benefitted from this as it has provided him with a greater insight into studying at Art School, which he now feels prepared for. Joe Bloggs is also participating in the Top-Up programme.”
