Combustion Process

Heat Fuel Heat Oxygen Exhaust

Oil Burner

  • Combustion process requires three key elements: fuel, heat & oxygen
  • Once combustion is underway, it can be sustained by control of these inputs

Primary & Secondary Phase Combustion

Primary Phase Secondary Phase

Primary Phase:

  • Main combustion undertaken

here

  • Injection of under-fire air to

control and enable complete combustion on grate

  • Monitoring of grate furnace

line and temperature Secondary Phase:

  • Further combustions of

particles within flue gas

  • Injection of secondary and

tertiary air

  • Complete combustion of

particles within flue gas

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a software simulation of a process in a defined system.

  • The system can be a component, area or fluid defined

typically by computer aided design (CAD) drawing

  • The boiler furnace has been used for Parc Adfer
  • The system is divided into individual nodes
  • The modeling applies typically to equations of fluid

motion and thermodynamics to understand the interaction of each node

  • The simulation is started and the equations are solved

iteratively as a steady-state or transient

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Boiler combustion involves simultaneous fluid flow, chemical reactions and heat and mass transfer.

CFD is a software simulation of the allowing estimation of:

  • Flue gas flow profile across the

boiler

  • Flue gas temperature profile
  • Flue gas velocity profile
  • Impacts of combustion air
  • Performance at different boiler

conditions

slide-17
SLIDE 17

17

  • Confirm boiler material selection against flue gas

conditions

  • Check impact of changes to combustion air and

grate operation

  • Confirm stable operation at different load conditions

Environmental Permit Requirement (850˚C @ 2 seconds)

  • Conditions are set by the Industrial Emissions Directive
  • Demonstration through modelling submission to NRW during design
  • Demonstration during commissioning and performance testing to confirm

compliance
