Assessment

All A Levels are now linear courses students will sit their exams at the end of the course.

Exam

50% exam (maths and science contribute 15%) for both AS and A level with two papers for A level.

NEA (non-exam assessment)

50% a single design and make activity for both AS and A level. For AS students will develop a design brief in response to a context set by AQA. For A level students are free to choose their design. 45 hours work.

Two sections

Section A Product Analysis 40 marks and up to 6 short answer questions based on visual stimulus of products. Section B 60 marks two extended response questions

Design, Creativity and Inspiration

Students present coursework in sketchbooks with A2 or A3 folders to note ideas, plan and develop designs. For students who are interested in pursuing a career or higher education in design they prove to be useful resources to take to interviews.

Computer Aided Design/ Making

Design and Technology

Students will develop an understanding of Sketchup 2D and 3D Design and use the laser cutter and 3D printer both for rapid prototyping and final manufacture products.

Understanding design outside the classroom

 The Victoria & Albert Museum’s permanent collections of 20th century design and architecture  Thomas Heatherwick: Designing the Extraordinary  Materials technology and the contemporary arts collection at the Science Museum  Degree shows at the Arts University College Bournemouth

We develop an understanding of design in its widest context with visits to museums and contemporary exhibitions such as:

A Future Career in Design?

Our Y13 students go on to study Art Foundation courses and degrees in Product Design, Engineering, Architecture, Fashion and Textiles, Business Management, Theatre Design and Jewellery Design.
