WORKING TOGETHER – Education & Research

In 2000, California State University, Fresno became the first university to combine its viticulture and enology research and educational programs into one combined entity under the direction of one leader, the joint position of department chair and director of

  • research. This position is filled by Dr. James Kennedy.

The faculty and staff of the Department of Viticulture and Enology and the Viticulture and Enology Research Center, Fresno State Vineyards and Fresno State Winery work closely to support our students and the grape and wine industry. The Department of Viticulture and Enology carry out its vision and mission in cooperation with its advisory board, grape growers, wineries, table grape packers, raisin processors, dehydrators, government agencies and the faculty and units of Fresno State.

  • The V.E. Petrucci Library is a collection of Henry Madden Library embedded in the Department of

Viticulture and Enology. Funded by the Viticulture and Enology Alumni Association, Henry Madden Library, and the Jordan College of Agricultural Science and Technology, the library focuses on serving the disciplines of growing grapes, and making wine. Named for Vincent Petrucci, founder of the vit and enology programs at Fresno State, the library is open to the public as well as the students and faculty of Fresno State.

DVE COURSE MATERIALS

  • Blackboard is the course management system that Fresno State uses for online

teaching and learning. Blackboard enables instructors to provide students access to course materials, communication tools, online assessments, and grades, as well as the ability to submit assignments electronically.

  • Blackboard can be accessed anywhere, anytime you have an internet connection

2015 ‐ 2016 GRADUATION ACTIVITIES

What is the Jordan College Convocation? An annual graduation ceremony for the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, held at the Save Mart Center in Fresno. Graduates who complete their coursework in December 2015, May 2016, Summer 2015 may participate in the May 2016 Convocation Ceremony. Caps and gowns are required. A student can only participate (and be listed in the program) one time for each degree

  • earned. Diplomas will not officially be issued at this event.
  • Exit Interviews for all DVE Graduating Students with Dr. Kennedy

DVE Graduates’ Dinner Thursday, May 19, 2016 – EVERYONE IS INVITED! Save the date now! All graduates are encouraged to bring their families and friends to this annual dinner, held the evening before the Jordan Convocation Ceremony. Graduates will receive one complimentary meal to attend. Guests are usually $30 each. Undergraduate students are also invited to attend at a discounted rate. The dinner is co‐sponsored by the industry and alumni group, and is a popular, and enjoyable evening.

Each year, approximately $20,000 is available for students who are interested in working under the direction of a viticulture or enology faculty

  • researcher. These student assistantships are made possible by industry

donations to our program. Student applications for assistantships will be available and accepted by the Viticulture and Enology administrative office in the Spring of 2016, for the 2016‐2017 fiscal year. Be sure to watch for announcements in the Spring of 2016! There are also many grant‐funded employment opportunities for our viticulture and enology students. See our faculty researchers for details.

  • Professional Organization: Become a student member of the American Society of

Enology and Viticulture – ASEV. Applications are available in the Viticulture and Enology Office Lobby. Student members receive discounts at professional meetings, including the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium in January. Visit www.asev.org.

  • Attend grape and wine industry sponsored trade shows, meetings, workshops, and

seminars.

  • Keep current by taking advantage of the resources in the V. E. Petrucci Library. The

latest periodicals and journals can be found on the magazine rack. Subscribe to grape and wine industry trade journals.

  • Get involved with local grape and wine groups and organizations, including the

Viticulture and Enology Alumni Association, the San Joaquin Valley Winegrowers, and the San Joaquin Valley Winemakers Group.

  • Attend or volunteer at meetings and events sponsored by our own department and

research center. There are many opportunities for students to network with our alumni and industry colleagues at these events.

Opportunities for students to participate at various promotional events for the department, research center, and/or winery occur often. If you are interested in helping, please watch for notices and sign‐up sheets. VOLUNTEER TO WORK IN THE FRESNO STATE WINERY Crush season has officially begun for our winery. Students in Enology 164 are required to work in the winery during the crush season to gain valuable hands‐on experience. Students enrolled in Enology 163 are also encouraged to volunteer anytime during the season.

All volunteers are required to complete paperwork prior to working.
