Reading • We use Wonders by McGraw-Hill • We focus on many reading strategies. • We also work on reading smoothly, fluently, and with expression, which greatly helps with comprehension. • We read several different genres: nonfiction, realistic fiction, biography, poetry, tall-tales, legends. • Whole Group and Small Group

  7. Handwriting • Handwriting - We will teach from Zaner/Bloser. Handwriting is assessed in 4 areas; spacing, size, shape and slant. • Keyboarding- We will teach from Edutyping

  8. MATH • We use Bridges Mathematics. • This curriculum is engaging, accessible to all learners, and blends direct instruction with investigations and explorations. • Problems and Investigations • Number Corner • 8 Units a year

  9. Departmentalized Classes • Our Science Units incorporate many hands-on experiments using the Scientific Process. • Our Social Studies Units focus on United States history from early man to writing of the Constitution and how our government works.. • Our Health Units help our students to understand and make healthy choices.

  10. Departmentalized Classes • Writing- We want our students to develop skills in writing personal narratives, descriptive, poetry, and persuasive writing. We do this using the writing process. • We will teach from Being A Writer. This is a writing approach that includes guided instruction, writing time, and sharing and reflection.

Bennington Grading Framework • Reading - weekly tests which include vocabulary and comprehension questions • Spelling - weekly spelling test on Friday • Math - Chapter Checkpoints and Work Samples, Chapter Tests • Grammar - grammar skills test • Social Studies - Chapter tests and projects • Science -labs, quizzes, and chapter tests • Handwriting and Writing - Graded on a 4-point rubric Beginning, progressing, proficient, advanced • 21st Century Skills and work ethic-see rubric

  14. Grading Framework Continued Specials (art, library-technology, music, P.E./health, Spanish) will report learning on a 4-point scale for quarterly grades. Beginning, progressing, proficient, advanced

  17. HOMEWORK • Fifth graders will have some homework. Check planners to see homework for the night. • Homework provides the opportunity for needed practice. • Homework also helps to develop skills necessary for middle school and beyond.

  18. Snack! • Students may bring a healthy snack each day. • Students may also have morning milk. • There is a cost for milk; $40 for the semester. Please check with the office if you want to pay for your child to receive milk.
