Abstract: At the core of most quantum technologies, including quantum networks, quantum computers and quantum simulators, is the development of homogeneous, long lived qubits with excellent optical interfaces, and the development of high efficiency and robust optical interconnects for such qubits. To achieve this goal, we have been studying color centers in diamond (SiV, SnV) and silicon carbide (VSi in 4H SiC), in combination with novel fabrication techniques, and relying on the powerful and fast photonics inverse design approach that we have developed. We illustrate this with a number of demonstrated devices, including efficient quantum emitter-photon interfaces for color centers in diamond and in SiC.

The Physics Department at the University of California, Berkeley is conducting an open search to fill a tenure-track faculty position for an Assistant Professor in Soft Condensed Matter with an expected start date of July 1, 2021. This position is open to all sub-fields of soft condensed matter, broadly defined, including but not limited to biological soft condensed matter physics, nonbiological soft condensed matter physics, and related areas of nonlinear physics. Title: " Topological Entanglement Entropy and Quantum Spin Liquids" Speaker: Shengzhu Yin Date: September 22, 2020 Time: 4:00 pm via Zoom

Abstract: Quantum spin liquids (QSL) are phases that show strongly interacting spins often observed in frustrated magnets. QSLs carry interesting properties like long-ranged entanglement and fractional statistics. Furthermore, it is known that even at low (or zero) temperatures, QSL does not have classical Landau order parameters to characterize the phase. However, recent development in topological entanglement entropy allows us to detect such topological orders in QSLs, and one can even extract fractional braiding statistics from anyonic quasiparticles. I will start by introducing what is (topological) entanglement entropy. Then I will discuss how one can diagnose QSLs and extract braiding statistics using such tool with examples. Abstract: Turbulence is the last great unsolved problem of classical physics. But there is no consensus on what it would mean to actually solve this problem. In this colloquium, I propose that turbulence is most fruitfully regarded as a problem in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, and will show that this perspective explains turbulent drag behavior measured over 80 years, and makes predictions that have been experimentally tested in 2D turbulent soap

  • films. I will also explain how this perspective is useful in understanding the

laminar-turbulence transition, establishing it as a non-equilibrium phase transition whose critical behavior has been predicted and tested

  • experimentally. This work connects transitional turbulence with statistical

mechanics and renormalization group theory, high energy hadron scattering, the statistics of extreme events, and even population biology. Advertising a postdoctoral position at Iowa State University to perform research at the intersection of condensed matter theory and quantum information. The work will be performed as part of a research team led by myself, Peter P. Orth, and my colleague, Thomas Iadecola. Potential research directions include the development of quantum algorithms for non-equilibrium dynamics in strongly correlated models with possible applications in many-body localization and non-linear response of quantum materials.
