Safety Message As proclaimed by Governor Ralph Northam, April is Highway Safety Month The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Virginia State Police (VSP) and VDOT are coordinating with external partners (VTCA, AAA, MADD, Drive Smart Virginia) to communicate highway safety messages to the public using a multimedia approach, which includes press releases by agencies, social media posts, web and social media banners, public service announcements (PSAs) and variable message boards on highways.

  3. Safety Message Week 1 Focus – Vulnerable Road Users Vulnerable road users are pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists Activities include: • Media presentations regarding pedestrian safety, cyclists safety and • Promotion of “Ride 2 Save Lives” motorcycle safety training program

  4. Safety Message Week 2 Focus - Work Zone Awareness “Work Zone Safety: Everybody’s Responsibility” Activities include: • Vigil at VDOT’s Workers Memorial on Afton Mountain, • “Go Orange Day” encouraging wearing orange in support of work zone awareness • Media presence with PSA for “Move Over Law” and Distracted Driving

Safety Message Week 3 Focus – Distracted Driving Activities include: • Take Action Against Distraction contest winner announced by Governor Northam April 12 • T ake Action Against Distraction contest message placed on Variable Message Boards • Distracted and Impaired Driving simulator at events throughout the state (high schools, military bases and NASCAR race in Richmond)

  6. Safety Message Week 4 Focus – Belts, Booze and Brakes Activities include: • Press event in Salem to launch “Car Culture” PSA and Highway Fatalities • Social Media promotion of “Buckle Up”, “Drive Sober” and “Safe Speed” messages • Selective enforcement for seat belts, DUI and speeding

  8. LYNCHBURG DISTRICT Comprised of 10 counties including Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward. Includes two cities, numerous towns and two of the largest counties by land area in the Commonwealth. Responsible for maintenance of more than 15,000 miles of primary and secondary roads. This is the only district that does not maintain interstate highways. Responsible for 1,959 structures on all roads. 9

  11. SALEM DISTRICT Comprised of 12 counties including Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke. Includes five cities and numerous towns including the Commonwealth’s most populous town (Blacksburg). Responsible for maintenance of more secondary roads than any other district — some 7,000 miles, in addition to 117.8 miles of interstate and 983 miles of primary roads. Responsible for 2,902 bridges with 1,926 on secondary roads, 5 in urban areas, 760 on the primary system and 211 on the interstates. 12
