Retinoblastoma is a rare genetic cancer of
the infant retina
- It can affect one (unilateral) or both eyes
(bilateral)
It is diagnosed in approximately 8,000
children each year worldwide (2).
The incidence of retinoblastoma in Kenya
is consistent with global published figures, at 1/17,030 live births(1).
At the country’s main referral hospital,
approximately 60–80% of ophthalmology ward beds are occupied by retinoblastoma patients(2).
SLIDE 4
The Kenyan National Retinoblastoma Strategy
was formed to improve retinoblastoma care.
The RbCoLab was established to provide
histology services for retinoblastoma.
The eyes are processed without removing
sample for genetic testing, as it is not yet available in Kenya.

Surgical handling of tissues can introduce
artefacts (e.g. distortion, folding, floater) which can compromise an accurate diagnosis.
The information gathered will be important
for quality improvement as genetic testing becomes introduced in Kenya, requiring sampling of tumor from the eyes.

Broad
d objectiv ctive: : To determine whether tumor sampling for genetic testing causes artefacts on histology slides. Speci cifi fic c objectives: ctives:
1.To determine the presence of artefacts and the
frequency of occurrence.
2.To determine the prevalence of artefacts in sampled
and un sampled eyes
3. To suggest corrective measures that minimize the
frequency of artefacts in the histopathology laboratory.

This study is a descriptive retrospective study. The study is being conducted at the
histopathology laboratory at The Hospital for Sick Children having obtained QI approval.
The study involves the review of digital slide
images, and pathology reports on eyes enucleated for retinoblastoma in the last 10 yrs.
SLIDE 11
Currently 68 digital slides have been reviewed with the assistance of a pathologist.
SLIDE 12
- Data tabulated on an Excel Spreadsheet.
- Parameters such as the laboratory
accessioning number, age of the patient in months at the time of enucleation, tumor classification listed on the accessioning form (and) tabulated.
- A standard Qc digital image used for
comparison with rep digital images.
- SPSS for data analysis.
