Annual Review 2017 - Meteorological Conditions

Meteorological Conditions

14

Wind Speed and Direction Prevailing winds were from the West during winter and from the East during summer. A westerly wind pattern is more common during winter through to early spring, in contrast to an easterly wind pattern during summer and autumn.

Annual Review 2017 - Air Quality

Air quality results over the reporting period were compliant, as follows:

  • Depositional dust concentrations were generally consistent

with the historical average and no sites exceeded the annual average criteria of 4 g/m²/month

  • There were no incremental increases of depositional dust

which exceeded the maximum allowable increase of 2 g/m²/month

  • No average annual Total Suspended Particulate Matter (TSP)

exceeded the project specific criteria of 90 μg/m3

  • No average annual Particulate Matter <10 μm (PM10) exceeded

the annual average criteria of 30μg/m3

  • No 24 hour average PM10 concentration exceeded the

50μg/m3

Annual Review 2017 - Flora Monitoring

  • Aerial photos from 1964 &

1990 show very substantial natural regeneration- approximately 850 ha across UCML complex.

  • Variable native and exotic

groundcover levels - no clear trends

  • Seasonal variability

Annual Review 2017 Highlights- Fauna Monitoring

17

Nest Boxes:

  • 45% of 105 surveyed demonstrated signs of

use,

  • 85% of nest boxes showing signs of use contained nests or nesting

material and;

  • 29% were assessed as having been currently or recently used

Microbats:

  • General Fauna Sites recorded 3 threatened

species:

  • Large-eared Pied Bat (Chalinolobus dwyeri)
  • Little Pied Bat (Chalinolobus picatus)
  • Eastern Bent-wing Bat (Miniopterus oceanensis)
  • 14 species of microbat were identified in

Cliffline Impact and Control Sites, 2 of these are listed as threatened (Eastern Bent-wing Bat & Large-eared Pied Bat)

  • Breeding confirmed at 2 sites where lactating Large-eared

Pied Bat females and young were present Mean Activity Levels of Target Microbat Species- Before and after subsidence 2011-2017

Annual Review 2017 - Fauna Monitoring

Aquatic Monitoring:

  • Results for aquatic monitoring (including Macroinvertebrate taxonomic richness, riparian habitat &

water quality) are generally unchanged from previous years, indicating that there is no observable ecosystem decline as a result of mining operations in 2017. Pest Monitoring

  • Five exotic species were recorded, including three species listed as pests under Section 10 of the

Local Land Services Act 2013 (LLS Act).

  • Fallow Deer (Dama dama) were most commonly recorded, followed by Feral Pig (Sus scrofa).
  • The Local Land Authority conducted an aerial wild dog baiting program during 2017 across forested

areas of Ulan Coal.

  • Pig baiting was conducted across site with game cameras showing approximately 60 pigs feeding at

the bait stations.

  • A targeted shooting program for pest species was also undertaken by a licenced harvester and

pastoral leaseholders to address overgrazing issues. Weed Monitoring

  • The following noxious weed species were recorded and are under management:
  • Senecio madagascariensis (Fireweed),
  • Heliotropium amplexicaule (Blue Heliotrope),
  • Opuntia sp. (Prickly Pear),
  • Rubus ulmifolius (Blackberry)
  • and Hypericum perforatum (St John’s Wort)
  • Chrysolina beetles have been identified in areas of St John’s Wort.
  • Spot spraying was avoided in areas of recent plantings to allow trees to establish.

Annual Review 2017 - Water Monitoring

19

  • Groundwater extraction 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017:
  • 5000 ML within Hunter Catchment, 1000 ML within Murray Darling Basin
  • Modelled inflows: 19.7ML/day - Measured inflows: 17.9 ML/day
  • Drawdowns consistent with predictions
  • The Drip - Hydro-geochemical analysis: the Drip is distinct from Triassic ground
  • water. VWP PZ29 was installed 1.8 km north of The Drip
