Regular Epping Forest Tree Warden activities

  • We have a number of voluntary

tree wardens who keep a watchful eye on trees within their own patch.

  • Report on the condition of street

trees, make suggestions for new trees, and initiate community projects, with local schools, and help survey trees and hedgerows.

a map

  • Mathematics - measuring and

working out how old and tall the tree is.

  • History - what was going on

when the tree was planted

Oak tree in the school grounds

  • Our tree is an OAK
  • Its circumference is
  • 3.93 metres
  • Its grid reference
  • is TQ44305 97726

Geography: Plotting the tree on a map.

Use smartphone GPS to get the grid reference co ordinates

Mathematics: how old is the tree?

  • Our tree is 3.93 metres

circumference.

  • To get its age as an open grown

tree divide by 2.5.

  • 393/2.5 = 157.2 years old.
  • So the tree started growing in

1862

Trees removing particulates from the atmosphere. https://shiny-apps.ceh.ac.uk/pollutionremoval/

  • Trees remove air pollution, and this has health benefits to society that can

be valued. Values vary due to levels of pollution, population density, and

  • ther factors.
  • This tool allows users to explore the change in value resulting from new

woodland planting, or removal of existing woodland, and its ability to remove PM2.5 pollution.

  • The tool is based on new modelling by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology

(CEH) and Economics for the environment consultancy (eftec). A more detailed explanation of the tool and assumptions behind the work in the button below.
