Wireless Body Area Networks

  • Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) intend

to facilitate use cases related to medical fjeld.

  • IEEE 802.15.6 standardize in 2012 and defjnes

PHY and MAC layer and is designed to deal with betuer penetratjon through the human tjssue without creatjng any damage to human tjssues with the approved MICS (Medical Implant Communicatjon Service) band by USA Federal Communicatjons Commission (FCC).

Need

  • WBAN is RF based wireless networking technology that interconnects tjny nodes with sensors

in, on, or around a human body.

  • On demand, Emergency and Normal traffjc
  • A typical WBAN consists of a

number of inexpensive, lightweight, miniature sensor platgorms, each featuring one or more physiological sensors like – Motjon Sensors – ECG (Electrocardiograms) – Sp02 – Breathing Sensors – Blood pressure – EMG (Electromyograms) – EEG(Electro-encephalograms) – Blood Glucose Sensors

IEEE 802.15.6 Wireless Body Area Networks

  • Scope: Standard for short range, wireless communicatjon in

the vicinity of, or inside, a human body (but not limited to humans) – Uses existjng ISM bands and/or bands approved by natjonal medical and/or regulatory authoritjes – Supports QoS, extremely low power, & data rates up to 10 Mbps – Complies with strict non-interference guidelines where needed – Considers efgects on portable antennas due to the presence of a person (varying with male, female, skinny, heavy, etc.) – Meets Specifjc Absorbed Radiatjon Limits

Channel model and Superframe

  • The channel model will include body efgects.

– Specifjc Absorptjon Rate (SAR), health efgects – Body shadowing causes severe atuenuatjon at some frequencies – Superframe format

The EAP is Emergency Access Period.

  • > In this period only devices with emergency traffjc can contend.

The RAP(Random Access Period) can be used by any device both emergency and non-emergency.

Benefjts by using IPv6 solutjon

  • The number of devices in WBANs makes network auto

confjguratjon and statelessness highly desirable. And for this, IPv6 has (default auto-confjguratjon as a) ready solutjons.

  • The large number of devices poses the need for a large address

space, moreover a WBAN may consist of 256 nodes maximum and IPv6 is helpful to solve addressing issues.

  • Given the limited packet size of WBANs, the IPv6 address format

allows subsuming of IEEE 802.15.6 addresses if so desired.

  • Simple interconnectjvity to other IP networks including the

Internet.

Issues

  • Limited Packet Size Applicatjons within WBANs

are expected to originate small packets maximum 256 octet whereas IPv6 MTU requirement
