The school’s vision

Our school’s ultimate goal is to prepare Sami youth for the challenges of functioning and thriving in local, national and international contexts. The school wants to contribute to the developing and strengthening of identity, language and culture among our Sami youth.

History

  • The School was established particularly for

the Sami people in Norway

  • Based on Traditional Trade and Sami

Culture

  • The School had courses in sewing and

weaving, working with hard materials as wood, iron and metal.

  • Also courses in reindeer husbandry
slide-7
SLIDE 7

Today it is a modern School based on Sami Values

slide-8
SLIDE 8
  • Guovdageaidnu is a vibrant Sami-speaking

environment, so is it at the school.

  • The schools curriculum is tailored to and rooted

in the local needs and values of Sami language and culture, but within the norwegian system.

  • All pupils study Sami language in different levels.

  • The Kautokeino Sami High School and Reindeer Husbandry school

is a state run school that is open to pupils from the whole country, as well as from the Sami region of Northern Sweden, Finland and Russia.

  • The school's vision is that, on leaving school, pupils shall have a

solid body of knowledge rooted in Sami culture.

  • Our school is officialy recognised as a distinctly indigeous school on

the upper secondary level, as we are a part of WINHEC.

  • This gives our students unique possiblities for communication and

exchange with other indigenous schools.

slide-10
SLIDE 10
  • The school has approximately 100 pupils.
  • The school has a well tried and trusted policy of pupils living

away from home boarding with local families.

  • The school offers evening courses in certain subjects. The gym

is open to pupils in the evenings.

  • The Sami Parliament in Norway gives a grant to pupils studying

Sami language and Handicrafts.

Reindeer Husbandry and Arts and Crafts

  • These are crucial elements of Sami cultural traditions.
  • Our school will continue to develop the curriculum of Sami subjects,

especially reindeer husbandry and Sami handicraft («duodji»).

  • Traditional knowledge is important for our school. We want to include

and implement it in as many subjects as possible.

  • In reindeer husbandry and duodji, traditional knowledge is a natural

and major part of the education.

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Natural Resources and Reindeer Husbandry

  • The school offers a 2 year course in natural resources

and reindeer husbandry.

  • Pupils have their practical experience in the extended

working communities they belong to.

  • The school schedule is organized to follow the ‘reindeer

year’ as far as possible.

  • Theory is scheduled for ‘quiet’ periods.
slide-13
SLIDE 13

Sami Arts and Handicraft

  • We offer a 2-year course in duodji at the school. We also

accept apprentices in the subject.

  • Material gathering follows the nature and reindeer.
  • In this way the pupils learn basic skills, from gathering to

using materials, to the final product .

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Building and machine operation

  • The school has a 2-year trade course in building and

heavy machine driving and operation.

  • This course has become very popular in recent years.
  • Some choose the building trade course as a foundation

for further engineering studies.

slide-15

Current Self-Evaluation

  • Student feedback indicates that our students are thriving
  • Our school scores above the national average with

respect to social environment and absence of bullying.

  • We work systematically with potential student absence

and drop-out.

  • Our current focus is on a common practice of student

evaluation and the elaboration of more explicit evaluation criteria.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Sami Language Instruction

  • 80 % of the students have Sami as their first language
  • 80 % of the teachers are proficient in Sami, 50 % are formaly

educated in Sami

  • We actively promote further education for teachers who speak Sami
  • We teach net-based courses in Sami as a service for other upper

secondary schools in Norway.

  • The development of Sami teaching resources is still a challenge.
slide-17
SLIDE 17

Student Recruitment

  • Currently, primary school student numbers are

decreasing in Kautokeino. That can create challenges for our school.

  • Nonetheless, our own student numbers have slightly

increased in recent years.

  • Our school has to attract students from other parts of

the country

  • Sami student applicants are prioritised
  • We want to recruit more students from other Sami areas

to reindeer husbandry and Sami handicraft.

slide-18

Future Plans

  • A new school building is being planned together with

the Sámi National Theatre Beaivváš.

  • Both the lingua franca and the ambient culture of

teaching shall be Sami.

  • Internationalisation and student exchange
  • Vocational schools in reindeer husbandry and Sami

handicraft
