Key Findings

  • Production - Raw material-Current goat population is 11000, out of which

Attapadi black is 2500 approx.

  • No proper identification system and data management.
  • Crude sales point (temporary ‘store’ for saleable goats).
  • No organised Marketing system. No product diversification.
  • No working capital. Some minor HR issues.
  • Goat rearing is not a livelihood activity for tribes. But it’s like an investment with

‘high liquidity’ for them.

  • Breed is getting diluted as they mix all breeds of goat together.
  • Almost all the families rear goats with herd size ranging from 5-40 numbers.
  • Attapadi black population is around 25% of total goat population.
  • Main source of income is MNREGS and agricultural activities
  • Milk is not collected

Proposed Solutions

  • Increase production an intensive breeding programme shall be commenced.
  • 2 or 3 Artificial insemination centres for att. black (with support from KLDB)shall be opened.
  • Maintaining a parent population with best of the best and culling the worst of the worst

continuously at field level.

  • A survey to identify all the attappadi black goats.
  • Proper shed for 150-200 goats
  • Explore market all over Kerala.
  • One goat-shed each with 50 goat capacity at each tribal village.(192 villages)
  • Free insurance to all the attapadi black goats with convergence with AHD.
  • Branding and marketing of goat-dung with convergence with Kannur Goat Producer Company
