EXPERT SMS Service

  • KIRAN has started to send SMS to the

farmers since July, 2013. Currently SMS is sent both in English and Khasi (local language) in the state

  • f

Meghalaya covering almost all districts and blocks.

  • Total numbers of registered farmers is

3569 till date. TRACKING SMS Service

  • Recently

KIRAN has introduced the TRACKING SMS (July 2014) to the farmers, both the dealer/ Institutional hubs and the farmers have to register themselves in order to receive the SMS

  • This SMS helps

the farmers to rear livestock and protect their livestock from

  • Total numbers of registered farmers is

3569 till date.

  • Total number of messages sent till date is

5,70,663 which include suggestions, guidance, preventions, technological advices and weather forecasting etc.

  • Most of the farmers respond to us through

calls and personal discussions about the benefits of this SMS in their agricultural

  • activities. It has really helped them in

knowing and using the new system of technology in cultivating crops and rearing

  • f livestock . Its has increased their

awareness and also it influences

farmers to register as well.

  • This SMS helps

the farmers to rear livestock and protect their livestock from

  • diseases. From the day of purchasing or

procurement, a message is sent every morning to them, till the later stages ,when the animal/bird are ready to be sold in the market.

  • Tracking SMS helps the farmers to know

better about the methods

  • n

rearing livestock and get additional incomes by linking them to dealers.

  • Currently Tracking SMS has been started

for Pig and Poultry farmers , around 400 farmers have been registered. Other Tracking systems for crops and other livestock are also being generated.

  • KIRAN

is a farmer friendly information portal, that has organized some field visits to villages in different districts of Meghalaya , and initiated them about Generic and Tracking SMS services of Kiran.

  • On field visits we get the opportunity
  • On field visits we get the opportunity

to communicate and get to know their actual problems, as many of them are

  • uneducated. Most of them

lack the knowledge about utilizing the governmental facilities which is near their vicinity.

  • Also we have helped the farmers to

form Farmer Clubs (6) in their respective villages and get registered with NABARD.

Convergence of Kiran with Farmer Needs Integration of services and diversifications The entire spectrum of services would cover three major aspects

  • Agricultural knowledge database creation and constant
  • Agricultural knowledge database creation and constant

updating of knowledge inputs

  • Farmer specific information compilation and inputs regarding

availability of critical farming inputs.

  • Development of farmer information delivery systems so as to

enable the accurate and correct delivery of information on a timely basis.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Short messaging services to deliver useful agricultural information The delivery of agricultural advisories in terms of SMS (Short messaging Service) to farmers would be done with two major areas of emphasis. The first one would be concerned with delivery of agricultural message to farmers with an idea of covering the technologies or practices that are “ ” to farmers with an idea of covering the technologies or practices that are seasonally relevant and contextually important to address farming issues. In the second type of messaging service it would be attempted to devise a “hand-holding service”for the farmers who procure specific agricultural inputs like seeds, animal germplasm, fish seed, horticultural rootstocks,

  • etc. In this type of messaging, regular alerts regarding the practices to be

followed would be given in advance as agrimessages and enable the farmers to adopt critical practices in a timebound and guided manner.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Apart from this other areas that would be covered under the SMS service would be information on markets, daily prices and trends of production. There would also be information conveyed regarding farming practices that are most suitable for a particular location and particular type of crop. that are most suitable for a particular location and particular type of crop. In the reverse category, i.e, farmer to Kiran messaging, a call center attending to farmer specific queries would be created. A link up with the IVRS facility would be devised. Photographic data uploads for attending to specific queries on the basis of visual data evaluation would be made available.

Major points to be addressed-

  • The most important issue is orientation of partners and stakeholders who could be very

useful components of Kiran.

  • Information

sharing and transmission protocols need to be developed and strengthened.

  • Up to this point, whatever information available with the ICAR RC for NER, Barapani has

been collated and uploaded, however other stakeholders also need to send data.

  • Data from other centers should be sent regularly and a scheduled data sharing protocol

should be developed for constant uploads and a wider coverage. State governments can also participate and upload data/information.

  • KVK’s should participate by posting area specific information, specific technical queries

and more farmer contacts with respect to areas under them. The periodicity of data transmission may kindly be adhered to ensuring the full utilization of the created platform in providing meaningful and wider information. The potential of the SMS directory of Kiran (KIRANews) to serve as a very advanced database of farmers from various areas of the north east should be explored and put into use by various stakeholders.

Periodic meetings and workshops between various partners of Kiran should now take place at regular intervals, as the portal for information upload is now ready and fully enabled.
