THE HISTORY OF HEMP

• A 9,000 year old woven hemp fabric was discovered in Turkey, meaning hemp production was apart of Stone Age cultures
• The oldest known records of hemp farming were found in China and are over 5,000 years old
• European settlers arrive in the early 1600’s bringing European Hemp with them
• War of 1812 fought over Hemp trade.
• Hemp was a staple crop of American agriculture and could be exchanged as currency throughout most of America until late 1800’s
• George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams all grew hemp and actively advocated for commercial hemp production
• The Declaration of Independence was drafted on hemp paper
• As late as the 1930’s medicinal hemp tinctures were available in pharmacies throughout America, US Pharmacopeia uses Hemp medicine

for more than 100 years, from the 1830s through the 1940s, and it was used safely and effectively for all of that time.

• In 1935 alcohol prohibition was ended and the ATF was out of work, 3 men worked together to target hemp created the name

“MariJuana” (Mary and Juan) and reefer madness was born

• Andrew Mellon former head of ATF, Dupont’s primary investor (Dupont made chemicals for paper mills that Hearst owned), and Hoover’s

secretary of treasury
